How do you make shiny, metallic text like in the image below?

Nice tutorial  : http://gimperdongogo.blogspot.com/2012/11/effetto-testo-metallico-in-gimp.html
PS : you can use the google browser and let it translate to English or whatever language

I did a short video on basic gold looking text https://youtu.be/mFy6-Gf4yTk might help.

However, looking at your example https://imgur.com/iE6jYlt  I think it is more like this

All basic Gimp tools
example: https://i.imgur.com/zXwwomk.jpg
1) Make your text layer, consider using a suitable 'blocky' font and you might want to space the characters out a little.
2) Bump the text layer up to image size to give working room. Layer -> Layer to image size
3) Select the rendered text Layer -> Transparency -> Alpha to Selection
4) Apply a gradient on the selection

next example: https://i.imgur.com/4NOrCgd.jpg
5) Apply the bevel Filters -> Decor -> Add Bevel 5a) Lose the selection Select -> None
6) There is a distinct drop shadow. Very hard and mostly vertical. Use Filters -> Light & Shadow -> Drop Shadow break the links between x & y blur=0 opacity=max.
