How do I close a top box shows the layers - Ezz9 - 07-24-2017

I added an Attachment because I don't know the name of it. so you can see what I'm talking about. I clicked something and now this bar showing my image in a small box at the top is making my work space smaller. :Sad Need it to be gone.

That is a normal image tab. You get one for each open image. There is no way to remove them

If you need a canvas without decoration Use Windows -> Hide Docs and the the tab key to toggle between

??? There is a way to remove it. I have had it off forever. I have had it off for so long I don't know what it was I click on to make it come back. It is pointless to have when I have everything on the left. showing me what I really need to know.
It's either in the view or image or layer or tools. I don't know. I was moving fast and a menu dropped down on me and I click to do some painting but clicked on something and that came on. I looked and trying a bunch of things for 30 minutes and thought rather than just keep guessing and wasting time, someone here would know.

Just what it says. In single window mode there is an image tab - one image open or a hundred images open - one tab per image.

You can go fullscreen with F11 but that tab will be there or as earlier TAB toggles the docks off which of course loses the image tab.

Were you working in multi-window mode Windows -> Single Window Mode unticked.

Is telling me nothing??? Use normal english.

and what is snip???  thats is not helping me at all if you can't explan.

what you see in the image is how I have it and always use it. I have no clue what that is called. Other then, the what I like it. but that tab or what ever it is called is on now.

What is the real name of that tab I'm tring to close. That I have always had closed and have F-ed up by turing it on as i wrote. Maybe I can find the answer if I know the real name of it.
It was one click for me to turn it on and 4 hours to find what it was??? ah the pain.

Maybe it's in the preferences but not knowing the name I'm back to pick it no not it pick it no not it and on and on????

crystal ball is in for a service?? then try reading from the start of the post and I won't have to keep writing the same things.
and if you don't know then stop answering with pointless info. That's not helping. This is a help page.

It is a help page but you have to understand what is being told.

The little square is called an image tab. It sits in the tab bar. The tab bar is at the top of the image window when in single window mode.

From Gimp 2.8.16 to Gimp 2.8.22 it is always there in single window mode for a single image.

Have you tried going out of Single window mode, that is the menu Windows -> Single Window mode option.

Why do I edit things?  for brevity and clarity: the full gimp change log
https://git.gnome.org//browse/gimp/plain/NEWS?h=gimp-2-8 hence the ..snip..

You are not the first to complain about the tabs
This from 2014 http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-user/16324-how-to-close-the-tab-bar-in-single-window-mode
Will it be changed? I doubt it, although in the development version Gimp 2.9.5 it can be moved to the side or bottom of the image window.

RE: That is a normal image tab. You get one for each open image. There is no way to remove them
Actually that is a feature, in that you immediately see all the image files that are in GIMP's memory so that you can save the ones you've edited or close them as desired when quitting GIMP.

As a 'solution' you might try one or both of the following:
Switch to a higher resolution on your monitor unless it it/or your GPU are topped out.
Bite the bullet and upgrade. I upgraded to a 27" BenQ running at 2560 x 1440 dpi also supports full sRGB. Absolutely no regrets—buck$ well spent.
The image tab is only 9/32" tall. Perfect!
