How about replacing the background? Like this:

What I did:
1. Selected the elephant using the foreground select tool
2. Inverted the selection
3. Deleted the background
4. Created a new transparent layer below the elephant
5. Filled this new layer with grey using a gradient

What exactly do you want to keep?

The original proportions of the image? If not why not crop the image to remove the sides.

Do you want to keep the shadows? and the general texture of the background, removing the visible corners of the light box? then some editing, maybe with a plugin such as liquid rescale or maybe just some large scale cloning

Do you want to remove the background completely? Replace with a uniform colour or pattern?
