Adding Coloured Border to Image - EasyGoingPat - 05-03-2021

I am wanting to post images on Instagram, which has the (in my opinion) ridiculous constraint that all images have to be square. The images I am posting cannot be cropped. Therefore, what I am wanting to do is make them square, with a coloured margin top and bottom, with the original image centered vertically and horizontally on the new canvas.

I have read load of guides about resizing canvases and adding borders but don't seem to be able to find any easy way to do this.

I would be extremely grateful of someone could explain how I might go about doing this, please.

Kind wishes - Patrick

All sorts of ways. This on the traditional side.

Choose a foreground colour
Image -> Canvas Size
Set the Width and Height equal.
Click on 'Center'
Set resize layers to All layers
Set Fill with to Foreground Color
Click on Resize.

If you have lots to process, well there are Batch utilities or the Command Line ImageMagick utility.

Well I don't use that. But I did a quick search, I wanted to know what image formats would be accepted (particularly if png with transparency would be).

The idea was to create a frame with transparency, leaving the image and its outline border in the center.

But what I could find about it was just that:

"
What is the image resolution when I share a photo on Instagram?
When you share a photo on Instagram, regardless of whether you are using Instagram for iOS or Android, we make sure to upload it in the best possible resolution quality (width up to 1080 pixels).

When you share a photo whose width is 320 to 1080 pixels, we keep that photo at its original resolution, as long as the respective aspect ratio is between 1.91: 1 and 4: 5 (height between 566 and 1350 pixels and width of 1080 pixels). If the aspect ratio of the photo is incompatible, we will cut it to adjust it to a compatible ratio. If you share a photo with a lower resolution, we increase the resolution to a width of 320 pixels. If you share a photo with a higher resolution, we adjust it to a width of 1080 pixels.
                                       "
