Black and White - Nico - 05-09-2021

Hello !

I'm trying to reproduce that type of black and white with GIMP : https://64.media.tumblr.com/3e9799783df32b2ed81a4494b8d03c56/02ca86c57f34486b-14/s500x750/5ba74abe8ee9506b56b0eb2cb42813a20e607478.png

It's more complicated than I tought. I think this picture may be realised with photoshop but perhaps I can do the same with GIMP ?

I tried a lot of things but now I don't know what to do. I can't find any tutorial on the internet.

Thank you in advance !

I'm not sure, but you could try:

G'MIC ➤ Colors ➤ Color Presets ➤ Others (69) ➤ Cinematic-02.

Thanks for your help !

So, I tried your idea : https://zupimages.net/up/21/18/igr0.png

It's not exactly the same but it's better than my attempts.

I tried in colours too, out of curiosity : https://zupimages.net/up/21/18/keb4.png

I think it's lovely and it's a begining ! If I could, I would like put a "halo" around the character, like my exemple.

Any idea ?

Thanks !

I used curves on the color picture to desaturate the colors a little : move the black side of the curves to the right and the white side down to get the result you want.
Then desaturate / Mono mixer to get the B&W result. And use the curves to optimise (move the white side to the left).
Name the layer BW and make a selection from the man
Copy the selection to a new layer (name layer 'man')
Make a new transparent layer
On the new layer fill the selection with white (name this layer 'white')
Put the new layer under layer 'man'
Put the layer 'BW' under layer 'white'
Filters / Blur / Gaussian Blur (use the sliders to get good result)
Use the layer mode opacity to get the good result

I've made a quick selection and that's my result :

Mostly a matter of adding contrast after desaturation (Color ➤ Desaturate). For this you can use the Brightness-Contrast tool or, for a finer control, the Curves tool with a S shape:

However:
  • As always, not all pictures work well for this. Professional artists don't take a random picture on the internet to apply an effect on it. They take a picture knowing what effect they will apply later.
  • Nothing says you can apply the sae setting on the whole image. In the exemple above the area around the eyes would need to be pushed a bit to avoid the shadows.

Following the steps taken by denzjos in post #4 I really liked the result.
I used Grain merge at 44.5 opacity in the layer mode.

Sorry, I'm horribly late but thank you all for your help, it's very useful !
