place text on path, unwanted border on text - bbxrider - 11-26-2021

been following this help video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CMt3Uc0zrg,
it shows the same steps as many other help vids

see attachments, the process goes ok until I get to filling the text with color, when
selecting the bucket tool, it looks like the text is selected now with a red border?
and sure enuf there looks like a red border remains on the filled in text?

I can't find why the selected text gets what looks like a red border?

maybe its not a red border?

if not a border what is it? and how to remove whatever it is

if it is a red border can't find anywhere how to remove a border
around text, except maybe to unselect the Show Layer Boundary under view
but that doesn't work

of course now the attachments are not in the order they should be, the process is
as expected in 3 attachments, 2 show where it goes off the rails

JEEZ... That video was very painful to watch, this guy does not know how to use GIMP! I almost felt that I was downgrading while watching....
That being said ... After Text along pathNo need to selection if there is no more manipulation, instead do Edit ➤ Fill path and you're done. (and you have saved at the very least 3-5 clicks and I stop here...)

The red border is not a border as you feel, it's just the path made visible
Go to  the path tab/dialog and untick the eye (BTW, on the Parker's video he is telling you this at 11:22 ...)

In case, you might still see something if the path tool is selected, just select another tool

thanks for the help,

ok the faux border is gone but the resultant fill still  has problems
there are voids and the start of the text is distorted so much I would
say its not useable

I tried your suggestion to use edit fill path after text to path, w/o the
additional selection step but nothing happens,
the text bubbles on the path just remain

Well the obvious is avoid sharp bends, however what you need is Ofnuts ofn-text-along-path.py plugin (just down from the top of the list) here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-path-tools/files/scripts/
Unzip, read the included documentation. (3) on the screenshot.

(1) Is the vanilla text-along-path as you already have.
(2) Is a slight improvement, force the text path above the line with a final carriage-return (CR) / enter key whatever you want to call it.  This one filled using Edit -> Fill Path.

The holes in the filled text, I have seen that before, usually comes from a path imported from some other application.  I think Ofnuts has a plugin to fix that as well, but probably not needed if you use the ofn-text-along-path.py plugin.

I just looked a few youtube's videos about "text along path", and those huge deformation after doing a text along path, seem to have appeared recently... not sure though

RE: place text on path, unwanted border on text - bbxrider - 11-27-2021

thanks again for the reply,
the plugin is not working, at least I don't get the
dialogue when selecting text along path

am going backwards here, now the actual
text is not along the path but I end up with
the orignal text and a curved version of it, then
if I turnoff viewing it in the paths dialogue
what remains is the original text

another 4 hours down the gimp rabbit hole

A script from Ofnuts which does not work? I'm very surprised...
Also Ofnuts put always a help file in its zip, have you over looked the help file called ofn-text-along-path.html in the zip? (no worries, you are not alone, I also did over look the help on another of its script Big Grin )
To quote the help file:
Quote:This script is called from the Paths list dialog, by right-clicking on the path used as a guide for the text, It appears in the Tools sub-menu (at the bottom of the menu elicited by the right-click).
Thus right click on the path in the Path list dialog, then look DOWN at the bottom for a sub-menu called Tools

RE: place text on path, unwanted border on text - rich2005 - 11-28-2021

I did say, Unzip, read the included documentation. However

If you find that a plugin is not easy to find, there are ways.
1) Traditionally, Help -> Plug-in Browser lets you search for a name and gives the location. Might look like this <Vectors>/Tools. Means use the paths dialogue context menu.

2) Gimp 2.10 brought in a search facility using the forward slash key ?/ the key with the shifted question mark.
That lets you search for key words and select from a list. Click on the entry to invoke the plugin.

A quick animation of that, (1) right click context. I detached the paths dialog so you can see the bottom of the menu. Not usually required.
(2) Followed by / search. 50 seconds https://i.imgur.com/0dakcSt.mp4

RE: place text on path, unwanted border on text - bbxrider - 11-28-2021

when I right click on the path, in the paths dialogue,
the dropdown does not have the tools option at the bottom,
see attached, I also created a new path, with no
actions on it to test the plugin

my documentation html that came with the download,
shows 3 sub options after clicking tools,
one being text along path, they are different from options that
show on the example video.
there is no info at all like the sample video showing first a search,
then  a new dialogue box, where all the work gets done, including
adding the text at that point only

so not sure why you explaining:
"If you find that a plugin is not easy to find, there are ways."

It seems, I have to figure out why the plugin is not being invoked in fthe first place
something to set in preference?

RE: place text on path, unwanted border on text - PixLab - 11-29-2021

it's because you let the ofn-text-along-path.py in the original folder (made by the zip) and did put the folder named ofn-text-along-path in the plug-in folder

remove ofn-text-along-path.py from the folder ofn-text-along-path,
in other words put the file ofn-text-along-path.py directly in the plug-ins folder (not in a sub-folder)

Then re-start GIMP

Quote:just to be safe I copied the EXTRACTED py to both directories...
This might not be a good idea.... chose 1 directory
