Where does it go? - sallyanne - 01-10-2022

The last gimp build I had 2.10.22 had a Raw editing Program already in it. (I don't remember installing one)
I am now using 2.10.30 and it doesn't have any but is telling me I can install RawTherapee or Darktable to open Raws
I have downloaded them...where do I put them?

You just install, same as any separate application, one or the other. There is a section in preferences Image Import & Export that you should check to see if it shows.

Chances are your Gimp 2.10.22 came from Partha and that version includes various extras including nufraw plugin, which personally I like. That is not working too well with Gimp 2.10.30, at least not mine, and the built in plugins that are provided link to either Darktable (DT) or RawTherapee (RT).

That means installing one or the other. And it (supposed to) work like this.

In Gimp open the RAW image same as any other.
That opens the image in  DT/RT where you can also 'tweak' the image if you want.
To get the image back into Gimp, close DT/RT and that opens in Gimp as a 32 bit image.

DT is quite large application RT a bit smaller, IMHO a bit over-the-top. Horrible interface. A shame the Gimp developers are hooked on them.

I will check in my Win10 / Gimp 2.10.30 VM and see if I can 'borrow' Partha's nufraw, see if it works.
edit: Got to open, but horribly slow, and ended up not-reponding. Could be the limited resources of the Win10 VM I use but truthfully not worth the effort.

I didn't get Partha's build this time. Assumed he may not have had 2.10.30 out yet.
So...What's not worth the effort?

I do not know if Partha is still active, last post was October 2020, hope he is OK.

Whats not worth the effort, first try took forever to render the RAW file in nufraw, which eventually 'hangs' I had to close down the Win10 VM .

Not to give up, instead of the plugins in folders, I put them straight into the plugins folder, if you want to give it a try, zipped here.  https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZByT3XZFW8o93gmBIH3NpRALcuVg4tbDGok   small download 1.2 MB
The usual, unzip, put the 5 files bz2-1.dll libjasper.dll libjpeg-9.dll nufraw-gimp.exe nufraw.py in C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\plug-ins

I was a fan of nufraw - Darktable and RawTherapee are much too complicated for what I require. I am now using Filmulator. It is a stand-alone program. It invariably produces a result which provides a good starting point for manipulations in GIMP with its default settings (other than occasional exposure adjustments).
It saves a 16 bit tif or a jpeg next to the raw file.

The latest version can be found at https://pixls.us/.

Thanks rich for responding anyhow.  I'll try Raw Therapee . I assume it goes in plugins? Then you have to make sure you can see it in your folders in gimp preferences, or make the path?
Should have refreshed before replying again. Thanks, you answered my questions

Let us know how you manage with Rawtherapee, although most questions about it go to https://discuss.pixls.us/ where the developers hang out.

Unable to download, keep getting file called .CR download. Will not complete Sad I tried it twice.

RE: Where does it go? - rich2005 - 01-10-2022

The installers, use one or the other.

https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/releases/download/release-3.8.0/darktable-3.8.0-win64.exe 117 MB

https://rawtherapee.com/shared/builds/windows/RawTherapee_5.8.exe 48 MB

Just to expand on my earlier post.

These are stand-alone applications. They do not go anywhere near Gimp.
Check that they work independent of Gimp and do open your raw image.
You might need to restart Windows after installation.
Gimp 2.10 does include the necessary files to find either if installed. You should check in Edit -> Preferences -> Image Import & Export and if you installed both choose the one you want to use.

The sequence in Gimp is File -> Open Then RT or DT will open with the image. To send to Gimp (memory a bit shaky with) RT there is some setup paths in the RT configuration. DT is close the program and it sends it to Gimp. These can be slow to work.

When it comes to that nufraw Gimp plugin, it is like me. Old, temperamental and bits often do not work.

If you image does not work with nufraw most likely it is a newer format the nufraw does not support. CR something
Canon use older .CR2 which should open but newer .CR3 probably not.

Your Nufraw zip is what was not downloading - oh well I have installed RT now and can see it is a stand alone.

Just found out too that if you open a RAW within gimp it will open in the RT program and when you close the RT program it will be in gimp.

By the way I didn't do anything apart from installing the program into my computer's harddrive
