Alignment keeps selecting entire canvas? - jediguitar101@yahoo.com - 03-08-2022

Something's happened and now, whenever I select a layer that is NOT the size of the canvas, GIMP keeps selecting the entire canvas border...thus I can't align anything. What's happened?

I have tried all ways, using the alignment tool to pick  the canvas size instead of the  active layer without success. I either have to pick the background layer or rubber-band the whole image.

Looking at your earlier posts there seemed some confusion to what was a small layer versus a solid rectangle in a transparent layer the size of the canvas.  Gimp does not use 'objects'

Please post a screenshot showing the Gimp interface including the layers dialogue and the alignment tool options settings.

I have got two alignment tool options here side by side, so you can see all of the menu. You cannot see the alignment tools once the relative menu is open but once you choose what you want it will be visible
There are 6 things to choose from to set your alignment relative too.
I opened a background and then a smaller off centre shape. I selected the smaller shape, set the alignment to 'first item' then chose the alignment buttons to make it central. I tested them all and if you want a layer above the background or image aligned, check relative to first item.

I think my problem may have been that the layer was in a "folder"? Is there a way I can align-select things within a folder without them considering the entirety?

I never got a problem with plenty layers in a group/folder and the align tool http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=19547&start=10#p267486
or, as you can see with a group, the selected white squares of the alignment tool > even on the smaller sized layer (layer's name is "screenshot_xxx..)

I suspect that your smaller layer, is some how "at the image size", or this very layer is not selected/visible in the layer stack (it does not need to be selected though)
If you can provide a screen shot with the tool option and the layer stack with the group opened while using the alignment tool, we might not guess what's happening for long Wink

This might help you find out what happened https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-tool-align.html there are good tips as well, like using the modifier key "Shift" to select only the layers you want to align...

Hi PixLab,

I saw the result of your image in post #5, which you posted on gimpchat.

You've produced a beautiful chocolate egg, with very smooth carvings!

How about a tutorial on how you got that result?  Wink
