I really like gimp - chris64 - 05-16-2022

I really like gimp. However, I'm a mac user. Gimp has become buggy. I'm going to stay with Gimp for as long as I can but I need to make a plan of what to do IF gimp becomes to buggy to be usable with mac. Does anyone have any suggestions for different software that works with mac? I'm also considering to install a windows emulator that runs on mac. I will then install gimp for windows and run it on mac.

I'd like feedback on both of these options
1. suggestions for similar software to gimp that runs on mac
2. Run gimp for windows on my mac by running it through a windows emulator.

you can run Wine on a Mac and it is free
https://downloads.digitaltrends.com/wine/mac or https://wiki.winehq.org/MacOS
Wine wont work on MacOS catalina 10.15

In what way ? Can you live with the bugs that show in your installation ? The Gimp developers do try and improve the Mac packages but Apple does not care about free / open source and that is where the instability lies. Report bugs https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issuess to the developers. You will not get an immediate fix but it helps with future releases.

I use linux and similar to Gimp, WINE (Wine Is No Emulator) is very much linux. Good for some utilities, I use it for a cataloging program. Just tried a Windows Gimp 2.10.30 Gimp opens, makes a user profile but hangs with the file selector dialogue. Tried an older Partha portable and the same thing. Not to say Gimp will not work in WINE but might take some setting up.

Why run Windows in your Mac ? It will cost you money. Just my opinion but a VirtualBox installation https://www.imore.com/how-set-and-use-virtual-machine-your-mac + a lightweight linux is only going to cost your time and you get a regular Gimp installation.

Agree! install a virtualbox and put a linux distribution, GIMP will be faster and not hang.

But if you never went to the Linux world, where to download a Linux system, especially for new comers to Linux?
Just 3 links, about systems I know for using them, other members can help you as well with their preferred systems
here https://mxlinux.org/download-links/ (my kids using it for more than 2 years just to tell how easy this distro is (before they were using the same Linux as me) also the live USB of this distro is just incredible if you want to try it without installing it
here https://linuxmint.com/ easy for beginners (tried a long time ago, not sure I can remember how it was)
here https://ubuntu-mate.org/download/amd64/ (I'll recommend the 20.04 LTS on this page, I use this system from 2016), with this one you can make it look like a Mac in just 3 clicks.
