Gradient from border - Relic - 02-09-2023

Wondering if someone could give me a little help.  I used an stl i modeled to create a grayscale heightmap for CNC carving but the outer edges are too steep (see red circle).

I figured I could fix this by applying a gradient around the boundary selection of the image in gIMP to soften the edge between my greyscale image and the black background.

After some google searching I saw there was a tutorial for gradient border select, and the image looks to be similar to the affect I'm trying to achieve, but it was on gimplearn, which seems to no longer exist.

I've included pictures of the greyscale image, what the result is in my carving software, and a picture of the effect i'm trying to achieve.

Any and all help appreciated!

Edit: seems most image hosting service are blocked on my work's network with the exception of tiny pic, which doesn't seem to load into the post correctly, I have included the links below.

Interesting, the forums still around even the site was pulled down.

Dang, finally found the plugin on the forum, but the attachment no longer exists. Sad

Maybe if you ask on the forum they will be able to post a link to it for you or it may come back eventually

If you can remember the name of the plugin someone might have it archived.

Is it something like this ? Starting with a regular FG to BG gradient and a selection

[attachment=9355]

(1) reverse the colours / color space linear / Shape Shaped (angular)

(2) Draw in the gradient - anywhere - any length, it does not matter with (angular)
Click on the gradient line to make a new stop. Adjust this and the center point sliders either side.
The gradient now shows as a temporary Custom. You can save by right click in the gradients dock and duplicate.

(3) Blending set to curved.

or is it actually the rectangular border shown in your example ? Do you want to add that to the height map ? Basically the same way but with increased canvas size and a selection of the (new) border.

Yeah... a lot of things are broken now on this forum, I don't understand why erasing when a simple .htaccess would have done the same job > just showing that "no more" page... without erasing the website.
Just my 2 cents...
On the time machine website, this time it's almost useless, just 90+ saves... it's sad.

I have version 2 of Tim's gradient border selection python plug-in. IDK if that's the plug-in that you're looking for.
