There is no "recommended" version, whatever that mean.
But the logic could be... When you buy a TV, do you search for a model from the 1980s at 480p CRT type, or for a flat screen from 2023 to least 1080P with Internet and Neflix pre-installed?

@nina47, I use gimp 2.10.34 on my computer 64 bit without problems (windows 10)

You have the choice between versions 2.10.34 and 2.99. 2.10.34 is the latest in the "stable" branch and is the one most people use. 2.99 is the experimental one and may break (and does) break things. Choose wisely.
