hand drawn line effect - Robpared - 01-30-2024

New here (architect doing building illustrations) and searched but could not find anything. New to GIMP and trying to use an effect similar to Photoshop ripple effect which I used to convert vector exported lines into a "jiggled" effect to make them look hand drawn (CAD drawing to render like traced by hand). Not looking for photo to pencil sketch or anything like that. The ripple effect in Photoshop is pretty straight forward, only choosing percent of "jiggle" and medium or large effect. The ripple filter in GIMP does not achieve anything like the photoshop ripple. The imported images are typically black and white. Looked across the web and everything is about converting photos into a pencil like sketch but the lines are not "squiggly".
Help please  Huh

It is better if you can give an example of the PS ripple effect not all Gimp users have that.

I was going to suggest the gimp_gmic_qt plugin but alas you are using MacOS.
Have you access to a Linux or a Windows machine ?

Maybe my ofn-path-waves script that can add a regular wave (with some distortion) to a path (so, vector), that you can then stroke.

I think this looks like the PS effect & using Gimp 2.10 tools, although you will have to experiment.

Make a canvas size layer, fill with solid noise. Filters -> Render -> Noise -> Solid Noise. Adjust to suit.
Use that as the input for the Displace filter, Filters -> Map -> Displace. Use small displacement values.

If you want a handrawn look but not black and white - try gimp's cartoon and bring the black up. Otherwise use the gimp plugin GMIC and try doodle or lineart. both are under artistic

Tried a quick one with a free Redfield plugin : https://www.redfieldplugins.com/filterCraquelure3D.htm

Not knowing what end result you want it is difficult to recommend a definite method. Also, I have never used photoshop so I don’t what the photoshop jiggle effect is.

However, here is a simple method that may suit your needs.

Assuming you have the vectors in Gimp as paths. Use the paint brush with a suitable size and check “Apply jitter”. Use Edit > Stroke Path and select “Stroke with a paint tool”, this probably on its own new transparent layer. Vary brush spacing and jitter to suit.

New here so just learning how to post. The previous response shows the original image (all straight lines from Sketchup image) when brought directly into Gimp. The middle image shows the ripple effect (shaky lines) in PS. Basically all the images are black and white imported into gimp, want to squiggle/jiggle them and then use them as a base layer to hand paint on top layers. Still experimenting...

When I tried to download, the link sent me to page without that plugin, all the ones listed where not free. (Mac OS) I'd like to try it may work?

I confirm, nothing about that plugin to download, and the ones I saw are not free.

Try with G'MIC (it's a free open source plugin, not a chimera), once installed, go to the GIMP top menu Filters > G'MIC_Qt, a window opens, go to Deformations > Crease or Deformation > Ripple

Crease

Thanks. So, have you installed on Mac OS? looks like it's mostly windows based. Mac OS: "use at own risk" caption. Hope is Mac friendly 'cause looks like that's what I need
