I just remembered: perhaps the layerfx 2.8 version isnt so bad, now that we have the 'See through' layermode.
The problem with the automatically generated layergroups was that in Gimp 2.8 layermodes inside a group werent active, but with the new functionality in 2.10 this has changed.
EDIT: this works fine for the Bevel & Emboss, but if you want to apply another effect, the plug-in puts the Bevel group inside another group for the next effectÂ
