Is the brush set on the (empty) clipboard brush? That is it very first one.
Next is check the brush size, not so small you do not see it.
You do not need everything selected. Only select an area when required. Use Select -> None.
It was the brush being on clipboard, hadn't realized that was abnormal. Thank you very much all fixed now!
