But not the other way round. Images created in 2.10 can't be opened in 2.8
Not completely true. With suitable precautions (layer modes and image bit-depth) you can save an XCF in 2.10 that can be used in 2.8. The XCF save dialog gives you a warning when you save an image that 2.8 won't open, and even tells you what features make that incompatible.
