I'm on an Intel Mac mini, fresh MacOS install, Sequoia 6.0.1. As you might know, Sequoia has some major problems with Gimp 3, which in my case means wild strobing of any new page, and the gradients in the color picker turning to solid magenta. My beloved 2.8 can no longer run at all; it can get partway through loading an image, and then it crashes. 2.10 has a font size so minuscule that I can't read it without a microscope. As an addendum to that, although it's possible to make the icons plenty big, the foreground and background squares are so tiny that if the colors are similar, I can't reliably determine between them. I spent hours applying elaborate alleged technical solutions; no dice.

I'm hoping there's something later in the 2.10 family that will be more usable...?

Hello, I'm thinking of switching back to Gimp 2.8 like I did on Windows 7 and it worked like a charm, but the new Gimp 2.10 I got on Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.1 Software Manager seems to have some functionalities like indexed mode I was really use to completely broken.

Is there a way I can download Gimp 2.8 on Linux Mint? I didn't see it in the Software Manager there was only 2.10 and I assume an even newer version..
I do have the installer for Gimp 2.8 I used on Windows 7 which probably can be run with Wine, but I would prefer not to do that because from my experience it seems everything that's run with Wine on Linux seems a lot laggier and choppier than it was on Windows 7 which is not good for when I want to draw...

If there's an AppImage of Gimp 2.8 I would prefer that because those are convenient and have everything they need to run, I looked on the official Gimp site and it said it had a download for 2.8, but it would always redirect me to Gimp 2.10 on the Software Manager so I assume it's not on the official site.

I'm running Linux Mint Mate 20.3 in a hundred notebooks for terminally ill kids in children's hospitals.. Often I must reinstall the OS in their computers because somehow a few of them kill the OS's.. But now when I configure the new Gimp in their notebooks, restart brings Gimp up not configured.. Seems I need an old version of Gimp for the kiddies computers running Linux Mint Mate 20.3.. I'd like to acquire a complete simple basic install ISO download of Gimp 2.1 so I can install it from a flash drive.. I just spent an hour bouncing around various older version Gimp websites downloading stuff here there and everywhere that doesn't work, in trying to find a suitable download ISO of the older Gimp that actually works in an Ubuntu-20.3 related OS, but I just can't find it.. Everything has been ultra modernized.. Can someone please tell me where I can find an old download of Gimp that actually works to install Gimp when you just click on the downloaded file...

I can't use the updated versions of GIMP; they are totally USELESS; they are incapable of preserving or manipulating transparency in images. Please refer to attached image, "Missing.png." There's supposed to be an interface there that details selection dimensions. It USED to be there, but I accidentally undocked it, and I can't get it back. If I can't restore this functionality, I will be forced to abandon using GIMP...and I have no other application that will fit the bill. My preferred version is GIMP 2.6.11. I've tried resetting values in Settings to default, but that worked for CRAP; the interface is still deficient.

I can think of only ONE solution, and it is unacceptable: Perform a clean reinstall of my OS, and reinstall all my preferred programs. this is RIDICULOUS. Help is no damned help whatsoever.

EDIT: I'd add text to the image to further explain the problem presented, but GIMP is totally screwed on my computer, now.

Howdy everyone,

(and plz sorry for bad English)

Years ago I bought a Cd-rom magazine with, among other software, The Gimp v 1.2 included in its Cd-rom. This was my first contact with The Gimp and I really liked it, and I use it until today in my Win98 PC. But recently I realized that the distribution of The Gimp in the version 1.2 was done with the use of the Developer Shareware version of InstallerVise, which forbids distribution of commercial software as it shows right when we start the setup of The Gimp v. 1.2, the pics below show it clearly:

 installerWise_sharewareScreen_1.jpg (Size: 55.16 KB / Downloads: 415)

 installerWise_sharewareScreen_3.jpg (Size: 176.42 KB / Downloads: 417)

And now I'm afraid I can be using The Gimp illegally.

Being an Open Source software, is The Gimp included in the definition of 'Commercial Software' which shouldn't be distributed with such version of InstallerVise? Or I'm free to use this version of The Gimp anyway? I guess the developer knew that and, if he insisted on using that InstallerVise, so it very probably is okay, but... I can't be sure, so I googled a lot, trying to find discussions about it or infos about it but no success. I even tried to look for other packagings of The Gimp online, but all the packagings of The Gimp in its 1.2 version were always done with the use of InstallerVise.

Also, the fact that The Gimp, packaged with such version of InstallerVise, was distributed in a magazine Cd-Rom makes it illegal somehow, making me unable to use it legally?

EDIT: I found a Wikipedia article about what is a Commercial Software, it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commercial...20software.

According to this definition, The Gimp can very probably be considered non-commercial software, as it's packaged with no commercial/business intentions. So, having this definition in mind, can I be in peace with the use of The Gimp distributed with that version of InstallerVise? What are your thoughts about it?

Also noticed when I went to "About Gimp" the link to Gimps web page doesn't work. Not sure what went wrong but I do know the last thing I did that could have changed things was when I did a disc clean up. I'm running Window 10 - 64 bit. I've read a lot of old complaints about similar issues but nothing worked or the person helping talked over my head. Not all that savvy with computer operations. Any help or ideas I would love.
Color to Alpha on this older Gimp had always had multiple options; foreground, background, black, white, and a thing to click to choose a specific color. Nothing has been updated or otherwise changed on my computer, and I haven't done anything to Gimp either, but suddenly, Color to Alpha ONLY gives me the thing to click to choose a specific color, the other options have just VANISHED! I use these options a lot in my art, and they appear to not exist in the current Gimp… the controls are so complex that I can't be sure, lol… so I really need my previous options back! Can anyone tell me how to do that… and/or, how my options vanished in the first place? Thanks!

Hello, everyone! My name's The Mouse Avenger, & this is my very first post here! ^_^

So, I'm having a bit of a dilemma...I'm gonna try & break this down as simply as possible:

1. So, I use the Windows 10 OS. I had to move the contents of my hard drive to a new computer, & reinstall of my programs & apps. I accidentally installed GIMP 2.10 initially, but then I remembered that all of my XCF files were saved on version 2.8, & files from any GIMP version earlier than 2.10 won't open, so I had to uninstall 2.10. THEN, I looked for GIMP 2.8 -- which I knew I had on my hard drive -- but I didn't pull up the file when I first searched for it. Thus, I ended up installing version 2.9...

2. Eventually, I found my 2.8 installer, & uninstalled 2.9. I ran the installation wizard for 2.8, but every time it tried to, it made my computer go into a BSOD -- more than once. Finally, I remembered what the BSOD error was, & looked up how to fix it. There were several methods that I tried, & after a quick reboot (plus Windows updates), the GIMP installation worked perfectly without making my computer crash!

3. But, THEN, I had another problem. When I tried to open 2.8, there came error messages that told me certain DLL files in my GIMP program folder were corrupted or missing. So I looked for those 5 DLL files, copied & pasted them into my GIMP program folder, & tried again. I didn't get THOSE error messages anymore, thankfully, BUT....

4. NOW, I'm getting ANOTHER error message when I try to open GIMP 2.8. Even after uninstalling & reinstalling the program, I still get the same error that prevents the program from loading. You can see it in the attached picture.

Sooo, what should I do to make GIMP 2.8 open & run successfully on my computer, like it did on the last hard drive? Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated! :-) Thank you very much! ^_^

Hi,
I've imported PDF templates from (now a selection) of websites then used them to create artwork for a CD booklet, disc and tray card.
The process involves creating the image within the border lines on the template, then flattening the image without the template.
The problem I'm having is that when the artwork is submitted and placed over the same template at the printers end the artwork is now way too small.
In GIMP I have measured the templates against the ruler bars and all is correct.
Can GIMP be reducing the templates? And if so how come the ruler measurements look ok?
Frustratingly, the tray card template hasn't presented any problems it's just the booklet and disc templates.

So I asked about this a few years ago, and as I had to reinstall GIMP, I'm running into the issue with creating custom hotkeys.

What I want to do is assign 'P' as the path tool, but no matter what I do, GIMP still has 'B' as its hotkey. I've gone to preferences and tried defining them there, and even keyboard shortcuts, but nothing works. It still has 'B' as the shortcut.

I'll attach an image showing this. But you can see I have it assigned as 'P', but it's not applying whatever key I insert.
Any help would be awesome.

Automate adding text into a PNG

Hello,

I've been tasked to take over a linux-based project. In that there are two PNG images, and their (source?) XCF files. Available GIMP version on linux host is 2.08.
There is specific text that must be replaced into these PNG images as the development works towards the next version of the whole project.
Historically the PNG modifications have been done manually. I'm looking to automate the task, and preferably with BASH (but I can make adjustments).
I have lots of linux SysAdmin, installation, automation and troubleshooting experience. Until this project I haven't ever used GIMP; I've simply absorbed the existing task.

The process today is to manually copy "PNG1_20220814.xcf" to "PNG1_20221026.xcf" and copy "PNG2_20220814.xcf" to "PNG2_20221026.xcf".
Next I run "gimp PNG1_20221026.xcf"; and manually edit an existing text box (I then do the same thing with PNG2, but its text is in a different place, though the same content).
I use the TEXT tool (block letter "A"), highlight the date/time text and replace it, then I do the same for the verson number.
I then save the new XCF as is, and then Export the image to the same name as a PNG. This is done for both images; manually.

PNG1/PNG2 text (standard/normal horizontal text):
Title Line of what it is (unchanging)
Date and time of the current version in this format: "20221026@1922"
New overall version number, in this format: "MAJ.min.sml".............. examples: MAJ="218" . min="076" . sml="002"

The 'box' this text is in is transparent, the text is some dark shade of Blue for one, and Red for the other. All of the text is bolded, and using font "Sans 18 px"

I don't know GIMP well enough to know how to describe digitally WHERE these text boxes are, just that I see them when GIMP opens each one up.

I could easily 'delete' the text box, and save a generic image without it, then use that as the source MASTER image forever.
Next, with a simple bash script, I would easily have the correct date/time stamp and proper version number information automatically available from other parts of the project.
I am seeking assistance in how to automate using GIMP, via Linux, in a strictly scripted fashion to automatically open the MASTER image, insert a new text box with the correct 3 lines of information at the specified coordinates, and then simply export the completed image as a PNG with a newly chosen name (as identified in the copy operation earlier).

I believe with some insight into how to automate inserting a 3 line transparent text box, say 20 pixels down from the top edge and 20 pixels in from the left edge, that I could finangle the process to place the text box in the right location with some iterative testing and logical guesswork. And as long as the insight is also provide on how to open PNG1, do the right text insert for it, then PNG2 and do the right text insert for it, and could save each PNG.... then I'd be much more efficient.

I have done searches throughout out google and youtube, as well as searches against these forums without finding any answer that matched up to what I'm doing.

Thak you, and I appreciate your help.
