When I run it, the GIMP window appears, but a) a completely blank "Welcome to GIMP" dialog appears in the middle of the screen. Only the dialog titlebar is visible, and clicking on the "X" at the RH end of the titlebar doesn't close the dialog, and b) if I click on any of the GIMP menus and select any menu option (I've tried about half a dozen different options from different menus), the GIMP windows just disappears.
The usual guarantee, there is none, I have tried out on the above (k)ubuntu / Mint versions and it works. Python is a bit old. If you find it does not work, easy, delete and use the gimp.org appimage (but no resynth / gmic for that at the moment.)
What of the future ? I think the next release might be Gimp 3.2 and users should try a permanent installation if available from say, a PPA. Then find a Gimp 2.10 appimage for those old but useful plugins. That is what I am planning. Future releases of ubuntu / Mint are going to be Gimp 3 anyway.

I have upgraded to Fedora 42, and GIMP 3 breaks all my plugins and script-fu, so 2.10.38 will be my last GIMP version.

I have been looking all day for an AppImage for 2.10.38, but all the ones I found did not work with Fedora 42.

I've found a 2.10.25 from 2021 that works: 2.10.25-20210610-withplugins-x86_64.AppImage

But this is way too old, I am sure it will break soon.

Does anyone can recommend a self-contained AppImage version 2.10.38 (or close) for Fedora?

Thanks!

A version of GIMP focused on painting and drawing called Artbox, using the latest GIMP code with new features added. An AppImage is also available for Linux systems. It is improved to work better on 4K screens and it includes plug-ins Almost Autosave and Incremental Saving amongst others. Custom made themes replace the default GIMP themes.

Created because it is enjoyable to make your own stuff and shared because that's what FOSS is about.
I've used it every day for months, so it is a well tested but not perfect, more insights and feedback are welcome. It's an ongoing project.

I was testing a Gimp 2.10.38 appimage on different systems. On an Ubuntu 22.04 system the appimage worked perfectly except when entering text from the text box to an image. Gimp was not logging anything typed on the keyboard but I could still type in the toolbox selection fields.

The same appimage worked on the same OS on a different machine. That was an early clue I missed. I'm pretty excitable and starting thinking this was a Gimp issue. I had never noticed you can type into the toolbox fields before.

Eventually I used info from starting Gimp from a terminal. I found Linux terminals allow 'unlimited scrollback'. It's almost unlimited but starting Gimp with heaps of old plug-ins that don't work uses a lot of unlimited scrollback One day I'll clean-up all those plug-ins.

Every time I typed in the Gimp text box and nothing happened the terminal logged an I-Bus event. I thought I-Bus must be a system utility but after googling it I remember installing it years ago. I wanted to type in Chinese on my keyboard, found it too hard and gave-up. Of course I just left I-Bus installed

What I didn't realize is IBus uses D-Bus which is started with the system and running all the time. Waiting for the day I'm testing text on an appimage. I removed I-Bus and instantly my appimage works perfectly. But first I announced on gimp-forum I had found a Gimp bug, lodged a gitlab bug report and ofnuts and rich commented that typing in a toolbox text field is normal.

So what did I learn? Linux systems properly managed are so reliable they retain your lazy mistakes for years as they keep upgrading and updating the programs you forget about. Maybe sleep on it before lodging a bug report that you have to delete the same day

Don't give-up on a problem. The World always needs problem solvers because problems cost money and a lot pf people think they are not expert enough. Problems are often solved indirectly. The guys here have solved many problems for many people and they do it for free. That's amazing!

Maybe the last of the Gimp 2.10 series but my first AppImage made on Debian.
Built from a deb file, it uses all listed dependencies (part of the deb package spec). These AppImages are basically the same as installing Gimp with apt.

Python2 is included along with MathMap but it could be the last time for MathMap. It needs updating to GTK3 and the menu paths issue fixed.
I found GEGL has been expanded and now uses a lot more small libs than Gimp 2.10.36. I think people will like and use this improved GEGL.

There are two AppImages one for overlay (Ubuntu) and fuse (Debian). Tested on Ubuntu 22.04 and Debian 12 bookworm. I'm pretty sure it will not work on Ubuntu 24.04.
The fuse AppImage needs ' sudo apt install fuse-overlayfs '
gimp2-10-36-python2-mm-ubuntu.AppImage

along with Linux Mint 21.3.

Neither the "use the online version" or "use a locally installed copy" of the help system work properly. I would prefer to utilize the "use a locally installed copy" offline option if possible. I have a .pdf copy of the help file/user manual, which is okay, but it's not integrated into Gimp and is a hassle to pull up each time I need it.

Trying on my own to get things working properly, I installed gimp-help-en 2.10.0-1 from Linux Mint's Software Manager. I knew it likely would not work, but did manage to get the 57.3 mb folder of .html files that was installed and saved it in case I could use that in some way.

I also downloaded the gimp-help-2.10.34 .tar file from docs.gimp.org, but really don't know what to do with it. I've never been too adept with tarball archive files.
Is it possible to get the integrated help file system to work properly with an appimage?

I've done a couple of installs now and have enjoyed using Debian 12 'Bookworm' so far. Stable is not the newest deb collection but I run the latest versions of Gimp and Firefox as AppImages so I don't care

What I found? Debian puts-up a little ring fence to scare-off newbies but once past that you have the freest, most versatile system imaginable.

To get a lean and mean system decide what window manager you want first. I came from Xubuntu so I'm used to XFCE. I installed Gnome first and it looks like a mobile phone so 2nd install was just XFCE4.

Early on you see this: 'user is not in the sudoers file'
The solution is this:
#su -
#adduser user sudo note. 'su -" is an actual command

I came across an easy way to update. Add this to a .bashrc

Code:

alias update='sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade && sudo apt dist-upgrade && sudo apt autoremove --purge'

Then just open a term and type 'update'.

Thoughts on Ubuntu.
I came to understand Ubuntu and it's spin-offs better by reading Mark Shuttleworth's bio.
I think Shuttleworth has a few things in common with Elon Musk, but Shuttleworth actually lived on the International Space Station for some time. He probably started Ubuntu to make Debian more accessible to the masses and he succeeded. I read Ubuntu was started by people cherry-picked from the Debian mailing lists. That could be an issue. As I wrote here the M1cros0ft partnership makes no sense to me. How many MS products are open source? Hardly any. Windows 3.1 is not even open source and you wouldn't use it as a lawn sprinkler controller

Canonical and Msoft has been working together for some years now with Msoft attending Ubuntu conferences. Nothing wrong with that except these are contradictory economic systems. Ubuntu get most of their software for free from Debian and volunteer programmers. Somehow this good will has been corporatized in a partnership that is supposed to be good for the users. I don't believe it. This is all about money.

It was just a matter of time before Ubuntu started breaking -down.

The problem with Msoft is they force people to jump thru endless hoops and deviations to get anything done. I don't like that.

So I'm moving on possibly to Debian. Debian 12.5 looks good and is a reputable distribution. BTW I don't thing Mint is going to be sucked-in to the Canonical vortex

I like this up to date system. Just a reminder that Snaps are AppImages and a lot of our data is collected and often lost by software companies.

2 years ago I installed Ubuntu 22.04 and was using it at least 3 months before release date in April 22.
Now with 24.04 I'm finding it full of problems a month before release.

AppImages worked for awhile and then seized-up due to an update. I fixed that by uninstalling Apparmour per this bug report.

24.04 Gimp version is 2.10.36 as a deb pack and maybe it will be the last of the 2.10 series?

Ubuntu's snaps appear in Synaptic package manager (I still use it) along with all the deb packs except you can't use snaps to build anything on because they have their own filesystem.

Ubuntu Pro. Why are some open source apps now part of an elite group of 'cloud computing' apps?

ATM Ubuntu 24.04 looks like it was made by over-zealous script kiddies who have decided to become a management layer in a flat open source world.

Sorry I'm negative about this but in 2024 everything is broken (except France )
