Bonjour,

Hi!
I would like to create a composition guide for Gimp, but I couldn't find anywhere stating how.

For clarifications, I would like to create the composition guides used with the crop tool, i.e. my custom version of the Rule of thirds, Golden sections etc. but with my own proportions. I've attached two images highlighting what I am mean, I would like to create a custom of those.

I am aware of that one can use vertical and horizontal guides by going to the Image Menu > Guides > New Guides, but that is not the kind I want to use. Neither would I like to use configurable Grid by View > Show Grid.

I am a beginner on GIMP (using 3.0.8). I am trying to print an image on an A4 sheet in a specific location.

It's actually a greetings card (made of an A4 pages folded in half) and the image needs to fill the bottom half of the A4 page, with a 5mm border all round.

I can set the image aspect ratio OK, but when I come to print it, I can see no way of placing it to a specific location on the page. In Photoshop, in the print dialog, you can specifiy the offset of the image to position it anywhere you like. But, I just can't see how to do that in GIMP.

Is there a way, what am I missing? The only thing I can see to do is pad the image with a lot of white space so it completely fills an A4 sheet and print that, but it does seem clunky.

I need to reduce the inseam of somebody's shorts.
The technique that I have thought about that can do this is to rotate her legs. So, I rotate one leg and then I rotate another leg.
However, this process leaves an absolutely unjustifiable white line that cannot be fixed.

Here are the details:

The original picture is this:
https://i.imgur.com/XVLBbZ9.jpeg

I load it into GIMP by Ctrl+Shift+V.
Then I use the free-form select to select the area that I want to rotate.
Here is the selection:
https://i.imgur.com/U9t5siP.jpeg

Then:
Edit -> cut
Edit -> Paste as -> Paste as single layer in place
In the Layers window (bottom-right of the screen), I move the new layer below the main layer.
At this point, it looks like this:
https://i.imgur.com/cqcRJdA.jpeg

Then, In the Layers window (bottom-right of the screen), I select the main layer, and add alpha channel to it.
Then I select the fuzzy select tool. Then I click inside that white area.
Then I press the Delete button.

As a result of that, the leg becomes visible THROUGH the hole in the main layer.
It looks like this:
https://i.imgur.com/YketQ4c.jpeg

Then I rotate the Leg layer.
Here is the result:
https://i.imgur.com/DxZfbhu.jpeg

Then I merge all the layers.
Then I flatten the image.
Here is the final result:
https://i.imgur.com/SDNYibB.jpeg

As you can see, the two triangular white shapes are justifiable side effects of the rotation, and I can easily fix them.
However the white line is ABSOLUTELY NOT a justifiable side effect of the rotation, because the rotation rotates the back layer (the leg) towards and partially to the back of the main layer. So it shouldn't create an empty space (an empty line) between the two layers.

Also, please note that fixing that white line is not possible (or maybe not easy) because it is right next to the sewing line of the zipper. If I use the heal tool to remove the white line, the sewing line will also be removed, which is absolutely not acceptable.

1. Why does that white line happen?

I really don't understand why this happens.
Can you please shed some light on this issue?
Please note that doing this same thing in other apps (for example Microsoft Paint) does NOT create that white line.

2. How can I avoid that white line?

3. If it is impossible to avoid it, how can I fix it?

Please help.
Thanks a lot for your help.
today i have a workflow question: i am interested in the extracting a "Dotted Network" skeleton from a glowing raster image for vector editing

the goal: I have a complex raster image (a network of dots/lines on a dark background). I want to "isolate a layer" to get a rough, clean vector skeleton (Base Layer). Later, I will use this skeleton as a foundation to build upon (a Model Layer).

my base question 1:the right tool Selection

Which is the best primary tool for this specific "extraction" step?

a) GIMP: (For curves/threshold) - i guess that this is the tool to use
b) Inkscape: (For bitmap tracing)
c) Krita: hmmm (For color-to-alpha)

My assumption is to use GIMP to kill the background and Inkscape to trace the dots to vectors. Is there a way to do this purely in one software?

the question here: Isolation Technique
How do I isolate only the brightest: lines/dots (..without dragging the "bokeh" (blurry glow) along with them?).....
- Is it better to work with Layers (e.g., subtracting a blurred layer)?
- Or is Color Decompose (HSV - Value channel) the standard approach?
- Are there specific filters (like "Edge Detect" or "Threshold") that preserve the dot structure without making them blobs?

the Question 3: The Vectorization:

When using Inkscape's Trace Bitmap, how do I prevent the scattered dots from merging together? The original image has distinct nodes, but the glow connects them. How do I tell the software to separate the "nodes" from the "edges"?

I want to keep this technology-neutral to learn all possible approaches, but I am guess that it best would be gained if i go with GIMP
to get the workflows done.

look forward to hear from you
Thanks!

GIMP 3.0.4 has me feeling like a dunce tonight.

I have what I assume is a very, very common scenario, where I'm not finding the solution obvious:

- I am in single-window mode and want to hide all dockable dialogs on the right-hand-side of GIMP.
- I do NOT want to hide everything with <tab> because I still want to use the the toolbox and list of open files while having more space on the right.
- I do NOT want to close every docker on right individually and permanently because then I would have to open each one individually again when I wanted it.

What I am looking for is the equivalent of:
- The Show/hide properties option mapped to F8 by default in MuseScore
- The right-arrow button that collapses the sidebar in LibreOffice Writer
- Or simply resizing the right-hand panel to zero width if it didn't set a minimum width.

This is something I imagine pretty much everyone who has who has ever had GIMP tiled in one half of a single screen and reference materials tiled on the other half will have wanted to do at least once, so I would be shocked if in the entire 25+-year history of GIMP development no one has been bugged by this enough to implement a solution -- yet none of the familiar ones seem to be present. What am I missing?

Thanks,
HCL or LCH - however you may want to call it, provides a consistent lightness of colors as perceived by human eyes. I think 2.10.38 is working okay. macOS Ventura.

good day dear experts, hello everyone,

i am currenty workin on some preliminary steps for a new project.

i want to show a little image for illustration. Therefore i need a image with some dots.

I have a basic-image (which i want to use as a starting point.)

well -i need only the dots - that are blue - not the green ones and not the yellow ones.

how to achive this:

well i think that i can work here with layers - or "masks" : can ´t i?

that saidL i think that we re able to - let us say "to isolate a certain amount oif the dots"

So - if i could work with layers - then i would be able to achive a image where i only have a certain amound of dots left - the (above menitoned) blue ones

How would you do that: - how would you try to achieve that - to make sure that only this blue dots remain.

so the question is: – how would you approach this, what's the best way to proceed? Should I use layers or masks?

I think it should be possible to isolate a single color here – to focus on the dots with only one certain color - the blue oner: , so to speak – and extract them - so that those dots are what remains in the end.

Should I do this with layers (or layers) or masks?

i think that this is a gerneral Beginner question - and yes: if i can do this - if i achive this - then i guess that i would be able to lots of other things more with GIMP

Loook forward to hear from you

Hello,
I had already requested this change in a previous version and it was implemented. I can no longer find it in version 3.2.

The idea was to provide quick access to selection drawing functions directly within the rectangular (and circular) and lasso selection tools.
This avoids having to navigate through menus to perform the drawing, resulting in a significant time saving.

Hi
I'm testing the new GIMP 3.0 on Windows, and I’ve run into a persistent issue with the Text Tool.
The Problem: Every time I select a font and start typing on the canvas, GIMP automatically overrides my selection and reverts the font to "Sans-Serif". This happens regardless of which font I choose initially.
Steps to reproduce:

Select the Text Tool.

Pick any font from the Tool Options (e.g., Segoe UI, Tahoma).

Click on the canvas to create a text box.

Start typing — the font immediately jumps back to "Sans-Serif".

System Info:

GIMP Version: 3.0

OS: Windows 11

Input Method: [english]

I understand that GIMP 3.0 is a major transition to GTK3, so I wanted to report this to see if it's a known regression or if there is a specific workaround for Windows users.
Has anyone else encountered this in the 3.0 builds?
Best regards,
