I cant find any decent tutorials on YouTube, but I found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_uNnawaBmE
The problem? It's for Photoshop, and I am having difficult time translating this workflow to GIMP. Does anyone here can help?

I have the hex code of the background red color (94151a), and with it, the RGB and HSV numbers. I've tried everything I could find under the Colors menu to plug these in to get the color I want, but with no success. The RGB numbers just make the faces look sick. I tried using Sample Points and Curves and tried matching the HSV there, but the result was the same.

The closest I get is when I use Colorize, but I'm just doing it by eye and the results are chancy at best. The cover, front and back, will have four or more images that need to match, and I'd like to do it scientifically if I can.

Am I missing a tool somewhere? Will using the HSV numbers do me better, and if so, where can I try?

I had to do the same thing with the cover of the first book in the series, and somehow managed it. But as I said, it was by sheer dumb luck.

I'm new to Gimp, and I was prompted to try it due to Paint no longer working.

Some backstory: I create 1/6 scale dioramas and, as a graphic artist, I create them all digitally, as the size they need to be, and then print them out and glue them to cardboard. For years (10+), I have created the files and then used Paint to print them out. I simply instructed Paint to print the files at 100% and they printed out at the exact size I made them as.

This past March, Microsoft released an update that has rendered this impossible, as a file that usually spans 6 pages now spans almost 40. It makes the file way too large. Adobe programs, despite my printer settings being set to 100% and scale to fit being deactivated, print the entire image on one piece of A4 paper. Acrobat, with its splicing tool, also prints too large and not to the size the images are made in.

I've looked up how to print true to size on Gimp, and while the size and resolution are just what I need them to be in the program, I still cannot get them to print properly. There is no longer an Image Settings tab in the print dialogue box, so I'm unable to adjust anything further in Gimp. All the other settings come directly from my printer settings, which are already set to print at 100%, but the same issue persists - what prints out is not the size I made the file as.

What can I do? I'm desperate... I need to be able to print my hard work in 1:1 scale, true to the size I made them in. I can't believe how difficult such a request is being. (I'd upload photos to show all my settings/issues but the forum isn't letting me... I click Insert Image and it prompts me to put in an optional size, then I click Insert and it does nothing...)

Layers disappear from saved files

Greetings!

I'm new here and still quite new to GIMP as well.

During the past weeks, I spent a lot of time on learning how to use this software and on working on my first projects. I'm a comic drawer and create different sorts of printed products with my images.
It wasn't before yesterday that I opened a file to realise that one of its layers had disappeared - the most important one I had spent many hours of work on. I opened a backup file just to see that the same layer was gone there too. I was extremely lucky to have created a third file where I had put all layers together just for a mixed demo print; so the visible data in it allowed me to restore the missing layer.
I had no idea what could have led to that incident; but I've ended up creating dozens of backup files on different drives.
However, this morning, just the same thing happened again with two other files on an external HDD. In one file, the main image was gone, in another one, a text layer. Now I'm scared even to open any other files with GIMP because I never know what it would do to them! It's dozens of hours of work that are at risk.

Is there any obvious reason for that problem to appear?

In this forum, I've read that somebody who had had the same issue had made a mistake by messing up invisible and visible layers or groups of layers. I'm not sure what exactly he has done; but I never created groups of layers; and all of my files' layers are visible. I've created raw files that contain basic elements such as textfields, backgrounds and borders; and I use to integrate my drawn and scanned pictures into those files as layers (by "open as layer"). Then I use to colorise the black/white images in there and leave the files the way they are structured, with all their layers.
Such a file's layer tree may look like this:

Text

Logo

Border

Background

Cutting additive

Signature

Image

I use GIMP 3.2.4 on Windows 11; and I've got my files saved on a USB stick and an external Backup HDD.

I'm quite sure that the problem is a bug and not due to wrong usage as I haven't made any obvious mistake; but I'm wondering if there's a way to work around it. Maybe I should transfer the files to the system HDD before opening them?

Any hints would be highly appreciated!

Hi,
when I click on an image with the zoom tool, I zoom to the pixel I'm clicking on;
when I scroll the mousewheel while pointing to the same pixel, at a certain point the image "centers" itself, and I end up in another spot. This is annoying, especially when zooming towards the corners of a selection in order to adjust it precisely.

In PS there is a way to change to behavior of the zoom (Overscroll checkbox).
Is there a way to make the mousewheel behave like the zoom tool in GIMP?

Thanks in advance.

Excessive color values in layer mask

Hi,

I am using Gimp 3.0.8, which is the version my Linux distribution provides. When I inspect a layer mask I"m using, I'm seeing RGB color values wildly above 100% (see attachment).

Once this happens, the layer mask (which is supposed to be the the percentage of the background to shine through) gets "wonky": what shows is not related to either what is in the layer nor what is underneath.

I'm think that I'm completely missing something important. The pink triangle in the color picker display seems to indicate something special is going on, but I have no idea what it stands for.

Note: I think this problem starts when I use Levels to force a lot of white (transparency) in the layer mask. It's like the levels create whiter-than-white colors...

I'd appreciate any help.

Just installed GIMP on new PC. When I try to select a layer, it always selects the entire canvas.

1) I have shrunk all 3 "PVC" layers to "Content"

2) ALL 3 of the PVC layers are ABOVE the "Cabinet" main image (Canvas size) in the layer list
2.1) None of the layers are in a group/folder
2.2) Hiding "Cabinet" layer does NOT change how Align is working (it still selects entire canvas)
2.3) DELETING the "Cabinet" layers STILL selects entire canvas for align

Forum will not upload attachment images (upload failed, images are JPG <300kb). They are just screenshots of the GIMP window showing the layer pane, and the align corner select blocks. I've circled the selected layer corner blocks in both images indicating it's selecting the
canvas, NOT the layer.

What am I either doing wrong, or is there an internal setting I have to update?

I did NOT have this issue in a previous installation (I had to replace that PC), which ha an older version of 3.2.4 installed (2025). Odd that both were noted as v3.2.4, and 2026 (April) is the same version, but has this bug when the 2025 installation didn't.

I'm fairly new to GIMP, although I'm no stranger to audio, video, and some image editing software, to include the now defunct Photoshop CS3. I'm reasonably confident I can dance through various options until I get my desired results, but today I'm stumped.

I'm trying to find a Windows x64 repository for a GIMP 3.2 Resynthesizer plugin, but I keep getting directed to v2.x and 3.0 plugins, many of which are python-based script. I understand GIMP 3.2.x no longer supports python-based script. I'm registered with GitHub for some of the audio/video editing and ripping software I use, and I'm not having any luck there, either, since most of the code within GitHub's repositories are Linux-based.

Can somebody point me in the right direction? The basic GIMP 3.2.4 plugins are fine for what they are, but I know firsthand how powerful tools can be when they are readily at hand. The tools I've read about that are contained in the resynthesizer plugin are some tools I'd like really to try.

Thanks!

I could not select any of the objects in the image. Initially, I thought only one project was affected. Not so. ALL of my projects are now locked for editing. I've uninstalled and re-installed GIMP 3.2.4 but to no avail. What could possibly cause this. I've also rebooted the computer several times. I'm at a total loss.

I have created a book cover for someone, for Amazon print-on-demand, which measures spine width by paper thickness x pages. I have made an estimate for final page number and sized the back/spine/front cover image accordingly. If the spine width should need to be increased, and thus the entire background layer/canvas, what's the best way to do this?

I tried enlarging the canvas, which left a transparent sliver on one edge. I tried filling the transparent area with the background layer color but nothing happened.

So, first, I don't know how to get the added real estate in the background layer, and second. I really would like to avoid having to move each layer over a tiny a mount to recenter.

Thank you!

Hello,

first time posting here. I'm a casual GIMP user, mainly using it for creating Sim Racing Liveries.

I recently experience an error message when exporting to DDS format using BC3/DXT5 or BC7. I'm on GIMP 3.2.4 using Linux, same happens on 3.2.2. Only 3.0.8 seems to work for BC3/DXT5 (BC7 is ot supported here).

I tested also on my Windows 11 Laptop with Version 3.2.4, also doesn't work here. It also seems not to be a picture issues. Old pictures where the export to BC3/DXT5 worked before, will fail during export on 3.2.4 too.

Any ideas based on the attached error message? Any hints are welcome.
