Thinking it might have some features the earlier version doesn't have, yesterday I got the bright idea to upgrade my version of GIMP from 2.8-something to 2.10.38 (the latest I can get that's compatible with my Windows 7 ThinkPad).

I've spent the last few hours trying to make it look and perform the way 2.8 did. (Insert usual excuse about my being a creature of habit.) I've figured out/stumbled onto most of what I need, but one thing eludes me, or maybe two:

Unlike with 2.8, the Tool Options, Toolbox, Navigation pane, and Layers box each seem to be stuck in one place, at one size. They're way taller than they need to be, and take up way too much space. I really didn't mind moving them out of the way when I needed to work on a more zoomed-in view of my image, but I don't seem to have that option here.

Is there a way to resize them and move them around?

Also, when using the Rotation tool, its dialogue box was sitting right on top of the image I was rotating, so I couldn't really see what I was doing. It wouldn't move, either.

Please, I hope there is a way to do this. If not, I may need to revert and forego any improvements 2.10 has to offer.

Thanks!

This is with Gimp 3.0.8-2 and Darktable 5.4.1 on Windows 11. When I try to open an ARW raw from my Sony camera or a DNG raw from my Leica, Gimp starts Darktable and the images display in Darktable as I would expect. When I close Darktable it displays "Exporting to GIMP" on the screen, but I then just get an error dialog, and the image doesn't appear in Gimp.

For ARW files, the error dialog is this:

For DNG files, the error dialog is this:

When I look at Gimp's preferences for Image import and export, the import options are set to this:

Any suggestions on a fix?

Why is there a folder for for Version 2.10 when the app is not listed in Setup?
How do I customise the brush folder?
Is version 3.0.6 good or is it still being developed? I have had problems with painting on layers and using layer masks.

Copy my toolrc back into C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\3.0.

Open GIMP and if it opens with the correct window size then:

Fix the docked tab options, default grid spacing, default export file type and other preferences that did not copy over from 2.10.38.

Adjust the canvas window size to fit a landscape oriented photo and adjust the docked window sizes.

Edit > Preferences > Interface > Windows Management > Save window positions on exit = uncheck, click on Save Window Positions Now.

Close GIMP.

This appears to fix the problem as the next day, GIMP opened with everything positioned correctly on both computers. I hope that this helps.

I hope someone can help me with this as I admittedly do not have a lot of experience with ICC-profiles and color management.

I am in the processing of preparing my pictures to be uploaded to a print on demand site.
The site requires that the pictures have a ISO 22028-2 ROMM RGB profile and are in PDF.

While converting the image in GIMP 3.0.1-1 to the ISO 22028-2 ROMM RGB profile goes well enough, when I export my image to PDF, the image becomes quite greyed out / looses saturation.

I do not know whether this is a GIMP, export settings, or ICC issue, and if anyone can recommend a solution, workaround or use of another programme to succeed, I would appreciate it greatly.

Still on Windows 10 and have had no issues with previous GIMP versions.

However versions of 3 have an issue.

The installation appears to have no issues and on completion asks you if you wish to start the program. You say yes and the interface for version 3 opens with no problem. However (whether you pin it to the taskbar or not) on closing it cannot be opened again as it has been installed and defaults to the exe for the previous version.

Foolishly I thought if I uninstalled that version a new 3 would be set up but there appears to be no way to say where the new version would be located so it fails.

In the App Data there are separate folders for each version but I cannot find an exe file.

I have therefore had to reinstall an earlier version and the latest download I could find is 2.8.22 although I am sure I had perhaps 2.10.

What am I doing wrong please.

Hi first time user here, have (rarely) used the P8888shop (sorry if thats a swear word) before but I am finding Gimp (3.0.2.1) a Steep learning curve.

All I am trying to do at the moment is find out how to make an image appear full size in the editing window rather than it being so fiddly small. I found something onling about scaling but I am not trying to change the size of the image, I just want it to show as large as the window will allow without changing aspect ratio. In other software there is a simple "show image to window size" or something like that.

I am running W11 Pro 64bit patched upto date.

I have attached an example picture which shows how much unused space in the editing window is wasted. I cant believe this needs more than a single "click" somewhere to make this the default??

Any help appreciated.
I have a *local* user - no Windows Live accounts - and it has administrative privileges. When using the installation wizard, I had it install for all users.
When trying to launch either gimp.exe or within Explorer, right clicking image, Open With, Gimp the ps shows up as a background ps in Task Manager. Gimp never launches.
However, if I launch gimp.exe as administrator (through Explorer) it does start - note it takes a LOT longer than expected, at least 3-5 minutes. Everything else on the laptop is fast (decent cpu, nvme drive, 32GB memory, etc on a Thinkpad T15).
