Incidentally, I tried the option to merge the GIMP menu bar with the system menu bar. I then turned it off, which didn't turn it off. I then reset the preferences, which didn't turn it off. I then uninstalled GIMP (using snap, which I installed GIMP with), shut down the computer, turned the computer back on and reinstalled GIMP. That didn't restore the system menu bar either. I don't know if that has anything to do with this problem or not.
Incidentally, the rulers and status bar should be turned off, but they've stuck around anyway.

Hi guys,

Under Windows, I have been using GIMP for years... actually... for decades. Every new version was a loved improvement.

I have 2.10 installed on 3 computers... effff PhotoShop!

But Windows 11 is not an OS... it's an AS. An Advertising System. That's it! Effff Microsoft. In the past I had Linux boxes, Fedora 8, CentOS 4. So I'm back at Linux... Fedora 42 KDE.

Install GIMP... 3.0.6... What the Hell?

Default is cut&paste is as a new layer and when you want to move it, it selects the top layer!!! You got to go Shift click so to move the layer you ARE ON???

The tool tips are mad and there's no way to disable them... if GTK 3 is crap... you don't use it. You're going to irreversibly damage your installed base.

I'm trying to do a simple livery a racing game and in 2.1 it would 4 to 6 hours. I've just wasted the whole day and I'm barely halfway. 3... is a regression.

I apologize but I'm not a happy camper right now.

I run Fedora.

I have Gimp 3.0.6 installed through the DNF package manager.

Under Fedora... probably most RPM based distribution, there is no Gimp-Help package.
Through the KDE GUI software installer, Discover, there is a FlatPack GIMP User Manual but, 1- it's 2.1 and 2- Gimp cannot find it.

So I downloaded gimp-help-3.0.0.tar.bz2, decompressed it but where do I need to put it so Gimp sees it?
Thank You !

Background: I've downloaded GIMP-3.0.6-x86_64.AppImage onto my Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS box, then created a .local/share/applications/GIMP.desktop file with the following content...

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=GIMP
Exec=/home/mark/Applications/GIMP-3.0.6-x86_64.AppImage
Icon=/home/mark/.local/share/GIMP.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Graphics;

... and then pinned it to the left sidebar (the "dash") searching for it in the app launcher, right-clicking it, and clicking "Pin to Dash".

It... sort of works. I see the icon in my sidebar:

And when I click on that icon, GIMP opens. But GNOME doesn't seem to understand that the newly opened window is associated with the GIMP program whose sidebar shortcut I just clicked on. Instead, it creates a new, temporary shortcut, with a generic gear icon, in the bottom section of the dash:

This behaviour differs from other AppImage-based applications I've created .desktop files for. For instance, if I open multiple windows of Zed, I see three orange dots next to my Zed icon in my sidebar, and I can right-click on the sidebar icon and go to "All Windows" to see all the open Zed windows I have open:

How - if at all - can I likewise make my open GIMP window be represented by an orange dot next to my pinned GIMP shortcut, instead of by adding a new shortcut with a gear icon? Is the reason this doesn't work that I have done something wrong in crafting my .desktop file, or is GIMP missing some kind of feature that's needed for it to properly integrate with the GNOME dock in the way other programs do.

Hi, I just compiled GIMP 2.10.38 (under an up-to-date Archlinux) from the sources in download.gimp.org, after a couple of tiny fix to get rid of some errors, and now I am trying to execute it without installation.

It seems to work well from the source directory when I run the command "GIMP2_DATADIR=$(pwd) app/gimp-2.10", but (most of) the UI icons are replaced by papers with gray warning signs: See my attachment "no-icons_warn.png".

I suspected the icon management to be an XDG stuff, and since I noticed the icons are present in the "icon" sub-folder of the current directory, I prepended the command line with "XDG_DATA_DIRS=$(pwd)", which changed the icons but not in a way that pleased me: See my attachment "no-icons_cross.png".

I am far from being an expert about Gimp/GTK and FreeDesktop icon management, does somebody know why the icons are missing? Should I tell GIMP where to find them? How?

*** Note ***
The edition I made on the sources are unrelated, they are :

1. Replaced the line 1372 of the file "plug-ins/file-tiff/file-tiff-load.c" by something like
gdouble xfix, yfix; gimp_image_get_resolution(*image, &xfix, &yfix); xres = xfix; yres = yfix;
2. Replaced the line 2143 of the file "plug-ins/metadata/metadata-editor.c" by something like

Unclear if this question should be posted on a gimp forum or an xnviewmp forum. Because there may be an obscure gimp setting, I am trying this gimp forum first.

I just installed Linux Mint 22, and then xmviewmp 1.8.7 64-big (Linux) - Libformat 7.220 and then gimp 2.10.36. Then, I used xnviewmp's open with : configure : gimp facility to start gimp from inside xnviewmp by right-clicking on an image. Doing this, gimp opens the image okay, but has an annoying popup message "Opening /home/steve failed : Not a regular file." I have unsuccessfully tried variations of the [ xnviewmp : open with : gimp ] facility. For example, if I instead specify gimp.sh, which contains the command gimp-2.10 %U, xnviewmp does nothing. Alternatively, if I xnviewmp-configure gimp to start with the %U option, then I get two popup error messages.

I would like to find a gimp setting (or alternatively a xnviewmp setting) that will prevent any such popup message. Before posting, I attempted to research the problem. I found similar postings that were not exactly on point. I did notice that responders were interested in gimp's interaction with bash, so I experimented:

When I start gimp, by itself, with the icon-command = gimp-2.10 %U, there is no problem opening/manipulating images.

When I open a bash termimal and execute gimp-2.10, again there is no problem.

However, if (instead) I open a bash terminal and execute gimp-2.10 %U, then I get the error message: "Opening /home/steve/%U failed: Error opening file /home/steve/%U: No such file or directory",

I don't really care about opening gimp from a bash terminal. That was simply an experiment.

Is there a gimp setting that will allow gimp to open the image as xnviewmp is directing, without also trying to open /home/steve/'? Alternatively, is there a gimp setting that will re-direct the message to a log file, so that I don't have the annoying popup, each time I xnviewmp-open-with-gimp an image?

Last night I tried to install the bimp gimp plugin tool, but the make failed since a missing tool "gimptool" could not be found on my system. I also tried to see if the yast2 software tools could locate this tool, but to no success.

Now whenever I start up gimp, I hit a delay around 30 seconds or so then the following message appears:

gui_dbus_name_lost: the name "org.gimp.GIMP.UI" could not be acquired on the bus.

running gimp with the --verbose option shows:

INIT: gimp_initialize
INIT: gimp_real_initialize
gui_dbus_name_lost: the name "org.gimp.GIMP.UI" could not be acquired on the bus

And the about 20-30 sec delay is occurring here.

Since I have removed and reinstalled all the gimp software using the software manager, I don't believe that this problem is with the gimp software itself but lies somewhere else.

Is this the correct forum to ask this question? Or perhaps try a GNOME forum?

The 30 second delay is not tolerable, especially when I had over 24 gimp photos to redo just this morning.

Thanks for suggestions.
That is lost now.

Pls GIMP manufacturers don't do this. When not broken do not fix it, the version I had was OK.

How can I roll back to the version that worked for me. I do not know the number, just the previous one.

Current (not wanted) version 2.99.19

Hi, I am running Gimp 2.10.38 on a PC running UBUNTU 24.04. Gimp is on a SSD with the other apps and my photographs are on a 2Tb HD with other data. When I try to open a photograph in Gimp, it recognises it but says "Reading permission denied" I can open the file which is a jpg in other programmes with no problem. I put one of the photographs on to a USB stick and checked the properties which included permission for read and write. I tried to get Gimp to read it but got the same response. I tried the USB stick on another computer running Windows 10 and Gimp on that PC accepted the file with no problem. What am I missing here ?

I have updated GIMP (Panda Jim) to 2.10.38.
Is it possible to update the Appimage loader to correspond? (gimp2-10-36-python2-mm-Ubuntu.Appimage)

I have tried extracting the Appimage, but could not see where to make the necessary changes.

I am running Ubuntu 20.04, but with the Unity desktop. Is it possible to upgrade this to 22.04 (or 24.04) whilst retaining Python 2.7?

Any help and advice greatly appreciated.
