enable Python scripting in Debian 11, GIMP 2.10.22 - rgbellotti - 05-07-2023

GIMP comes preinstalled with Debian 11, but doesn't seem to have Python scripting available, only Scheme.  I tried finding solutions to this but ran into dead-ends

I am not too sure what works with Debian 11 Buster. The default Gimp from the repo is 2.10.22 so there might be a small possibility installing the gimp-python packages from here: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Heal-Selection-Missing-from-Gimp-on-Ubuntu-20-04?pid=18354#pid18354 There is a risk that they are not compatible and you end up with broken packages.

Before you attempt the .deb packages I would try the appimage mentioned on the same page: https://github.com/TasMania17/Gimp-Appimages-Made-From-Debs/releases/tag/Gimp-Python2-AppImage-Launchers-for-Linux

Download, make executable, run. Either it works and adds on-the-fly python or it does not work. Not a lot lost if it is no good with Debian.

Otherwise the only sure-fire way is install the Gimp 2.10 flatpak. There are notes on installing the flatpak here: https://www.gimp.org/downloads/

Thank you, yeah I didn't have any luck with the appImage launchers, but flatpak was the solution

Hum strange that it does not work for you, this appimage works well on MX Linux 21.3 which is based on Debian 11.

Yes they launched GIMP fine, but without Python support.  There's probably a way to install the necessary packages to run those, but I didn't feel like experimenting with this system.  I went with the straight-forward approach
