How to install GIMP for portable usage?
#4
I can not really help you, I use linux, and Windows installations have largely become something of the past. I had a look at the Partha portable version, lots of the bloat is for the extra plugins, QT files for gmic, lensfun etc for RAW import, but all mixed up, going to be difficult to separate. You will have to ask Partha Bagchi

You could look at the portableapps 2.8 installation and how it utilises the Gimp environmental variables to point to the installation.
Some (old-ish) information here: https://www.gimp.org/man/gimp.html down the page.

Edit: hmm.. Apparently I did this for a now defunct forum back in 2014. Starting Gimp from a batch file. http://i.imgur.com/kpdrLUJ.jpg
Obviously for Gimp 2.8, try it for Gimp 2.9

If the object of the exercise is purely an installation on a drive other than C: Why is the 0.5 MB gimp profile in roaming such a problem?

---------------

For anyone coming to this thread, a "minimal" installation just the same as you have. (using E: )

Install the regular Gimp 2.9.x from gimp.org to E: Use the customise option and untick languages, that saves a whopping 273 MB and gets the basic installation to 334 MB

Before first run. Disable any existing Gimp 2.8 profile to prevent migration of existing resources and settings. That gets a largely empty Gimp 2.9 profile (470 KB) in %appdata%

Make new folders on the E: drive for any resources you need and add in Gimp 2.9 preferences.

That gets 99.8% of Gimp 2.9 on drive E:

Installed help? The Gimp 2.8 help files work, put the Windows version help folder(s ) as: https://i.imgur.com/X1Lm7tl.jpg 31 MB
and looks like: https://i.imgur.com/79a0szX.jpg but it is Gimp 2.8 help

There is on-line help: https://docs.gimp.org/2.9/en/ but that is very much work in progress. As in the 2.8 splash screen still there.
