		Is this the regular Filters -> Decor -> Add Bevel ? It relies on making a bump-map and this did fail in earlier Gimp 2.10 versions (something like 2.10.10 to 2.10.14) 
Why it stops working periodically I do not know, might be some weird MacOS thing. Check that there is a bump map and if there is, does it look feasible. There is a check box for keep bumpmap, it should look like source layer. Make sure you are on the correct layer when running the filter. example: https://i.imgur.com/j6qmMdN.jpg
Otherwise, there are alternatives, they still use bump-mapping (which might be the problem). A couple attached, both are script-fu and go in the scripts folder. Both show up in Filters -> Decor More complicated but might be more stable.
