Cropping out an overlay
#1
First off, I'm going to say that I am an absolute newbie at this, so I apologize If I'm asking a question that has been asked numerous times already.  Thank you all in advance for your help

And now for the problem.

I'm trying to crop out parts of the flag below and leave only the part that the crab touches behind. In addition, I'd to like overwrite the crab's texture with that of the flag.  Basically I'm trying to recreate that Maryland flag sticker that people have on their cars.  I have everything sized the way I want it, but I don't really know where to proceed from here.  Help would be most appreciated.

The crab is bigger than the flag, but I think this may be close:

(1)Select/highlight your 'Blue Crab' layer and go Layer->transparency->alpha to selection. Once that is selected, then

(2)Select your 'Flag' layer and go Edit->Copy.

(3)Create a new layer by going Layer->New Layer

(4)With your new layer highlighted, go Edit->Paste

I think that is what you mean to do? There are many ways to do it.

Various ways, but can be a variation of this post.

Use a selection from the crab image to apply to a layer mask on the map layer.

If you want apply 'texture' one way is a bumpmap. Probably best done as a separate procedure.
The cut-out flag with a desaturated, blurred crab as the bumpmap.
