Depth to flat image

I'm just an idiot - please help me

Does someone know of a tutorial to explain how I would add 'depth' to a flat image?
In this image below, you can see the shadowing.

I can create a rectangle, and add a wave effect, which will look like a flag, but there's no depth internally

Just the basics, goes like this https://youtu.be/fZQBRM5wOSE  2 and a half minutes Bump map first then Displacement map.
