Until then, before you export to a jpeg image, use Image -> Flatten Image.
To preserve your work always use Image -> Save for a Gimp .xcf file which keeps layers / selections / layer effects ....
Thank you Rich! This fixed the other issue I was going to post about that when I edited colour and cropped, the changes were applied to the wrong part of the output image.
