Excessive RAM usage at load
#1
When I open Gimp it is using 700mb of RAM before I even open an image.
PC Windows 8.1 / 12GB RAM

When I open Gimp I see from the task manager window it is already using 700mb RAM.

This seems very high -- and results in mouse lag.

Have cleared doc history and reset to defaults.

What am I doing wrong....?!

Many thanks.

screen shots.

And somehow I have lost my hand move tool at cursor. Now only got a cross hair which will not let me move screen windows...!

Help...!

Welcome to gimp-forum.net

That is certainly not normal. I generally use linux but

1. A Win7 VM with one image open http://i.imgur.com/FDJrX7W.jpg 83 MB
2. A Win10 VM with a few images open http://i.imgur.com/VtoUQ15.jpg 285 MB
and a little bit for script-fu

Plenty of system resources there but might help if you give the version of Gimp you are using. Do you have lots of resources - fonts - brushes - installed
It could be that enormous cache tile size you have set 5 GB ? Have you tried reducing that? [edit] maybe not that big considering your 12 GB system memory and does not come into effect without an open image, so scrub that one.

That is the hold space-bar (cursor changes to 4-way arrow) move? or is it a windows tool?

I am sure that an experienced Win user will be along but in the meantime have you tried the standby fix

rename your gimp profile C:\Users\your-name\.gimp-2.8 to C:\Users\your-name\.gimp-2.8-bak

Start Gimp up to make a default profile and check memory usage.

If you can run Gimp without any of the resources using the switch -d

-d, --no-data
Do not load patterns, gradients, palettes, or brushes. Often useful in non-interactive situations where start-up time is to be minimized.

In Win7 using the run command and

Code:
C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\gimp-2.8.exe -d

That starts a minimal Gimp

Which should use just a small amount of memory, proving it is a Gimp resources problem or not as the case may be. I get just 29,900K

Looks like you need to lose some of those resources until required. A recent post had a similar issue (possibly) see:   https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Brushe...07#pid2107
For details of a resources manager.

In case you ever come back, come to the conclusion that:

That 700 MB is such a big value that it will be worth a new install of Gimp, The latest Gimp 2.8.22 has improvements for installation and handling resources. Get it from http://www.gimp.org not other sources.

Disable the Gimp installation folder and your Gimp profile by renaming so that all your resorces are saved.

Then check the memory usage of the new Gimp.

Fonts do make a difference but not 100's of MB.

With fonts disabled and no scripts/plugins loaded

With system fonts and about 100 fonts in the Gimp Profile.

The difference is noticeable but not that great.

Combined with the other problem, look for broken installation.
