Unsupported compression file GIMP 2.10.0
#1
Hello there. I am trying to open a file (bmp) and am getting the error:

Opening 'C:\Users\Chris\Desktop\Boeing 737 Britannia\texture\B737TAIL_T.bmp' failed: Unsupported compression (861165636) in BMP file and was wondering what can be done to open it?

I have attached the file

.bmp   B737TAIL_T.bmp (Size: 256.07 KB / Downloads: 453)

The program DXTBMP opens the file OK, and it reports the format as: BMP (DXT3) 512x512 16Bit

Thanks Chris

DXTBMP opens it OK because it's a DXT Extended bitmap that only it and the flight-sims understand. You will have to find some other software to export it to a standard format.

Hi Kevin and thanks for your reply and info. I see, I wonder if Photoshop may be able to open this type file? It would be great if GIMP included DDS/DXT import/exports for a future release.

Many thanks,

Chris

XnViewMP https://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/ will open your image and convert it to various formats that open in Gimp. What is described as 16 bit in your dtxbmp comes out as 8 bit.

No way in Gimp to export as that dxtbmp format from Gimp. There is a dds plugin that exports dds. Do a search and you will find it.

There is this https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-How-To...96#pid6196 Probably no good for what you want.

A bit of a search and dxtbmpxnew from http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/ converts to other formats (again 8 bit) and (says) it will convert back.

Thanks for the information Richard/Kevin, am going to try the 64bit DDS plugin and see how I get on. I have downloaded the DXTBMP New program and have managed to export the image to GIMP now. Thanks for your help!
