A bit restricted but might be of use.
A cut down appimage that relies on system python 3 installation and qt5 (for the gmic plugin)
https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=...sLD8CXBYh7 43 MB
and for the gimp_gmic_qt plugin https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=...wBHYijirC7 5 MB Unzip and put the folder in your Gimp user profile plug-ins folder.

Rich, you are a good person and have tried your best, as much as anyone probably could. Unfortunately, the cut down version didn't allow renaming either.
Maybe it's just something on my end that isn't quite correct. Either way, I'll check back on this thread occasionally to see if maybe you have any other ideas about what steps to take.
If not, I'll be fine and can just go back to Gimp 2.10.36 that is in Mint's repositories as a package install.
(Update) I also tried to revert back to your Gimp 3.0.4 AppImage that is listed on this board and can't rename with that one either.

Rich, as I've looked over things a bit more, it has been discovered that I can't type any value or number into any dialog box anywhere within Gimp. For instance, I can't change any values in Arrow plugin, the text tool does not allow input of any text, there is no way to add any text to the Custom Font on Path tool, etc...
So, when I earlier said that the only problem is that I am unable to rename files to export in order to save, I was WAY off and just had not throughly examined things.

Things I've tried to do to fix:
Ensured I was using a US Keyboard Layout
Made sure Sticky Keys, Slow Keys, and Bouncy Keys were disabled in Accessibility settings
In Gimp:
Made sure Use Dynamic Keyboard Shortcuts was disabled in Preferences
Reset Keyboard Shortcuts to Default Values in Preferences
Using Text Tool - Right clicked and changed input from System IBus to X Input Method & also tried None
Deleted /home config folder of both AppImages and let them rebuild upon reopening.
To review, just in case I may have failed to mention this, the Gimp.org 3.0.6 AppImage works fine, even though it is practically useless for me.
All the custom AppImages, which are 2.10.38 and 3.0.6 and the recent cut down 3.0.6 you provided, are unable to receive any type of keyboard input, not just the renaming of files for Export As or Save As as originally stated, it's every input box.
Keyboard works as expected with every other program and input on current install of Mint. Problem began only with update of Mint from 22.2 to 22.3 Cinnamon; no problems whatsoever before this.
Very soon, I'll try the Mint 22.3 Repository 2.10.36 package install and see if that works and let you know how it goes.

Very strange, if you looked at that little video I posted then exporting with a name , using dialogs is working with that Mint 22.3 VM Maybe have a close look at what is installed on your system. That Mint 22.3 install is from an ISO not an upgrade 22.2 -> 22.3 maybe that is the problem.

I had not given that any thought. I'm writing the Mint 22.3 image file to a flash drive now and will see if I can get the Gimp AppImages working in a live boot environment. If so, I guess it will be time for a fresh install of Mint instead of just the update.
I'll update you as soon as I test it.
I live booted Mint 22.3 and the first thing I did was to dowload the Gimp.org 3.0.6 AppImage and give it a try. It worked properly just as in the regular Mint 22.3 install. No problems changing image sizes, renaming, using text box, etc... All worked as normal.
Secondly, I got all three custom AppImages you have provided, which are 2.10.38, 3.0.6, and the cut down 3.0.6 that I have saved, and opened them up and got the same results. A seemingly dead keyboard in regards to any input box in Gimp.
Thanks for sticking with me on this, Rich. I think I'll now burn the old Mint 22.2 .iso to a flash drive and see if I can get the AppImages working. I want to make absolutely certain that I was able to use them before the update to Mint 22.3. I think they were working fine before the update but, I just want to double check now because I'm starting to doubt things.

Well, as stange as it may seem, I wrote a Mint 22.2 .iso to a flash drive and pulled up both original Gimp 2.10.38 and Gimp 3.0.6 Appimages and even the cut down version of 3.0.6 and opened them and they worked perfectly fine in the live environment.
I was able to change image sizes, rename, type text using the text tool, etc... This whole situation really doesn't make any sense does it?
They work for you in a virtual machine environment using Mint 22.3 but don't work for me in a Mint 22.3 live boot, but do work in a Mint 22.2 live boot environment.

Looking back at what sometimes happened with gimp. An overlay program, something like those things that darkened the display at night, I do not know what that one is called.
That would stop the mouse working for some reason.
Edit: Just for info: It is a MATE DE. The Mint 22.3 install from the ISO was a straight forward install. Mint partitioned the VM and wrote the system and the standard apps. I did an apt update / apt upgrade which pulled in about 15 updated packages. The only thing I installed was synaptic so I can easily check on versions but not used to install anything. It is a clean installation.

I installed Gimp 2.10.36 using the package install method in Mint's Software Manager. Python was mismatched somehow, so no Python plugins worked.
After this, I did finally try Mint's Flatpak 3.0.6. Immediately I found that Resynthesizer and Beautify threw up errors when attempting to open. I just copied over the plugin folder from the AppImage 3.0.6 config files I already had. So, really, I'm not sure if I did the install correct on those 2 plugins or not. Gmic did work, though.
I started to think, even if I did mess around with the Flatpak 3.0.6 and got the plugins working, what would I have? It would still just be a shell of the Appimage 2.10.38 install I had, plugin-wise, simply because there simply aren't that many 3.0.6 plugins available yet.
Eventually, I decided to downgrade Mint back down to 22.2 Cinnamon. I'm right back where I started before updating Mint but, everything works properly anyway.
I can use a solid and dependable Gimp 2.10.38 AppImage and toy around with the Gimp 3.0.6 AppImage as both work again and I can type text in them.
Thanks for joining me on this bizarre journey, Rich, I know it's been a wild ride.

Rich, if you are still interested in this convoluted situation, this last statement you made caught my attention. You stated you used a Mint 22.3 MATE DE.
Curious about this, I downloaded the 22.3 Mate desktop environment and gave it a try on a live USB with the 2.10.38 and 3.0.6 Custom AppImages you provided to me.
They both worked flawlessly and keyboard input was working properly.
Thinking I was perhaps losing my mind, I downloaded the 22.3 Cinnamon version of Mint again and tried the custom Appimages on a live USB and again, it failed to work properly with no keyboard input allowed. This was the same result when I still had Mint 22.3 fully installed.
If this whole topic isn't tiring you by now, I do think I may have figured something out. Not how to fix anything, of course, but that the issue seems to be tied just to the Cinnamon DE in Mint 22.3.
