Rich, as I've looked over things a bit more, it has been discovered that I can't type any value or number into any dialog box anywhere within Gimp. For instance, I can't change any values in Arrow plugin, the text tool does not allow input of any text, there is no way to add any text to the Custom Font on Path tool, etc...
So, when I earlier said that the only problem is that I am unable to rename files to export in order to save, I was WAY off and just had not throughly examined things.
