Gimp doesn't recognize most image extensions

Hi 
I just installed gimp 3.0.2 and when tryng to open a PNG image I find that I receive the following message: "File type unknown"
When I check what file extensions are recognized I see that only XCF, PAT, GBR, GBP, GIH are.
Can somebody please help?

Hi! How did you install GIMP (e.g. from the Windows Store or from the site installer)? It sounds like there's an issue with the image plug-ins - either from a bad install or anti-virus.
