how to measure in gimp?

i have wide feet, the only wide that fits me is new balance extra wide. but recently, i have noticed new balance extra wide doesn't fit me. what i am trying to figure out is if they made their shoes more narrow, or if i have some kind of a medical condition causing my feet to get bigger. in the picture below, I am trying to compare the width of the new shoes with the old ones. but i dont know how to do it in gimp. i know the measure tool exists, but i dont know how to point it in the right spot, and i dont know if i am drawing a straight line.

Can't you use a tape measure directly on the shoe? You can also put sole against sole and see if one is wider.

But none of this tells you if the inside of the shoe is wider/narrower, or if the shoe won't loosen/widen a bit with wear.

Yep. The outside of the shoe nay be wider beause of it may be wider where the sole is stiched to the upper. So you really cant compare just by looking at the bottoms. Most people do that just for length (I'm guessing). Unless of course the shoes are the same make. You really need to know what the inner measurement is and you may have to contact the retailer to find out.
