See if this answers your question
https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-tool-gradient.html

Also they could allow larger sizes, (so could ALL photo/picture sites, but they don't, won't) if everyone did they would not beable to have alot.

Like i've done good work like this before in GIMP, but that was a few versions ago.....10k https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Qxp8miY...sp=sharing
source svg: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1STn5996...sp=sharing
it is also possible that my .svgs have data outside the bounds of the pictures which might be effecting selections made but I have no idea.

500 KB for a file size is more than enough for most questions. The Gimp .xcf allowance is a bit larger at 1 MB to provide for questions about layers / selections / guides etc.  All about bandwidth. If you have a slow internet nothing worse than waiting for some monster image to load.

12000 x 12000 is a large size, but it should work, I made one up and this took 4 minutes 20 seconds to render. Linux / Gimp 3.2.4 (appimage)

It is going to depend your computer. Try Windows -> Dockable Dialogues -> Dashboard to show the state while rendering.
Lots of small selections, it might help if you turn the "crawling ants" off View -> Show Selection ...and as you say, might be your image(s)

Ok well that is good news, like when I first had issues i did test runs of smaller sizes and I know i'll be waiting for a while but i've devoted solid 20 minutes to waiting for the dialog to complete, best i can figure is at that size some of the selection goes off "canvas?" and that selection seems to hang the gradient tool like, select all the feather the selection and tick the box that allows off image feathering and i think it'll hang the gradient tool when used....... I'll do more testing anyways and get back to you...... Nope worked fine at 2000x2000 all good at 15000x15000 too maybe its my .svg file...... which i've attached, so my workflow select by colour be generous about the "range" click the black component of one of the shapes, then feather the selection by a pixel or two if you didnot grow it beforehand then gradient tool across that selection, (this part i never get to anymore) select inverse fill with black

Did you know you can also (in version 3), colour with a gradient in a different way now, using gradient map.

@id10terror

An alternative workflow for the supplied SVG. Avoids selections. Still quite time consuming

Open the svg at 12000x... and import merged paths.
New transparent layer and Edit -> Fill paths.  That took 3 minutes on my laptop.
Apply an alpha lock on that layer.
Apply the gradient. That took 5 minutes.  CPU usage still 70 - 80 %
