You could use this to divide an image up for printing posters, composed of separate smaller sheets. http://i.imgur.com/VT79zFz.jpg

I would think a more likely use will be the creation of a large array of tiles, maybe for a game.  Think the built-in guillotine produces many images all needing saving one-by-one, whereas a stack of layers can be exported in one go using a plugin. As with most Gimp your imagination will produce uses.

There is a compiled plugin which does similar, with a result as this: http://i.imgur.com/XeTEGRT.jpg

Not really, it's for cases where you need rearrange square things in a layer. What started it is here.

To answer that question I found a similar plugin on Gimper.net, but it was written in C, needed recompilation, etc... It was faster to rewrite if.

This said, iI tend to write my plugins to do one specific thing (instead of a full workflow), so they can be used in very diverse workflows, your imagination is the limit.

Not entirely sure i get it, but my question was because theres an extension in Inkscape named guillotine, that helps exporting parts of the canvas with the help of guides.
For example if you want to print out a large image sliced into several din-a-4 sheets.

A guillotine is apparently also a name for a tool for cutting paper.
Something that was discussed here:

As it says in the help, this is the layer-level equivalent to Image>Guillotine.
