When I import TIFFS from SEESTAR S50 into GIMP:
The 'colour channels' are immobilised, and cannot be used!
What am I not doing(right!?).

Tiff format comes in all sorts of 'flavours' Your images are probably greyscale or even indexed mode.

Use Image -> Mode -> RGB
