Mask on face in a photo
#1
Sorry i dont know how to technically ask but i am wanting to put some type of layer or mask on the face of someone on a photo that is so they are barely seen. I dont know what that is called. I know i used something like that in some software decades ago but i have no clue of what the effect or whatever is called now or indeed then

There are lots of different methods, depending on the effect you want.

1. Work on a copy of the photo, not the original

2. Use either the rectangle or ellipse selection tools and make a selection around the face.

3. Filters > Blur > Pixelise. Play with the strength to get the effect you want. Or you could use Gaussian Blur instead of Pixelise for a different effect.

There are other methods (eg swirling).

I love these Wink Using an elliptical selection, shown outlined

There is the often used pixelize. http://i.imgur.com/I7YPRGV.jpg

Just as easily could be a regular gaussian blur http://i.imgur.com/8ojduIx.jpg

Whirl and pinch - well it is different http://i.imgur.com/cQBEQ1a.jpg

but I prefer a more traditional approach.
