Microsoft ICE like stitching
#1
Hi, is it possible to stitch images into a seamless one like Microsoft ICE using GIMP?

Trying to stitch multiple images into one for Blender texture. Thanks

PS: Is there any tiled view like in Krita? - View > Wrap Around Mode

There are easier ways of stitching panoramas than by using GIMP. Personally I use Hugin for this.

Thanks. Is Hugin a plugin? I am supposed to create a seamless image from the photos. Any pointers will be great.

I have always run the stand-alone version (not sure that there is a plugin version). It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

This one?

Do you know an effective method to get a seamless pattern from a photo or a group of photos? Say a wash towel or wooden flooring like this

A Blender texture ? Probably more than just a simple answer required.  How many rows and columns of images ?

Nothing like MS ICE for Gimp. As previous post there is Hugin, but more aimed at stitching a scenic view rather than a texture. Might not be suitable for a 'flat' image.

For Gimp there is:

Pandora: https://shallowsky.com/software/pandora/

..and an example I did way back in Gimp 2.8 https://youtu.be/zBma6CT3mjY Over long (6 mins) but it does give some tips on use. Up to the user to rotate / scale / adjust hue - very hands on.

StitchPanorama https://stitchpanorama.sourceforge.net/

Never really used this, works with pairs of images at a time.

...and a non-Gimp program nip2 https://github.com/libvips/nip2

I sometimes use this to stitch geographic maps together, not so easy to use.

Just a comment, for 3D textures there is usually more involved than just a single image, there are associated normal maps  etc. Any clues as to the images you are combining ?

Edit: Only just see your image of a wood texture, Making really good seamless texture is a bit of a dark art. The attached straight out of resynthesier plugin with make tile-able set.

It is seamless but not perfect a there is a obvious repeating section if you fill a large canvas.

This is the tiled view for the above image in Krita. Once I get a stitched image, the workflow demands a seamless view

I haven't figured out how to do it yet. Without it, the floor will look like this when applied to a large surface.

Thanks admin

I can use tools like Substance maker to generate those maps from a ready-to-use image.

As for the image, I have to deal with it the raw way. Say, I am going to capture a mud road. I can take one or more images and feed it to the substance maker nodes.

Multiple images are meant for higher resolution. I can use a single image for basic needs. But as in the above post, I am not sure whether they will be seamless when applied to say a 5m x 5m plane.

I checked with some professionals, they said something like using the clone tool might help.

This is how they do in Krita.  I do not understand how

This is the previous re-synthed image I posted tiled. It is seamless but there are discernible repetitions. It can be improved by the user.

repititions

Bricks and block work, a little more difficult. can be made by hand look at Layer -> Transform -> Offset Layer then by width/2  height/2 as a starting point.

Need to eat at the moment, some hints on the brick later.

A couple of quick demos

For a more uniform texture like those boards / paper / concrete, first try the resynthesizer plugin. That is what it is made for.

For slightly more complicated patterns, try the GEGL tile seamless Filters -> Map -> Tile Seamless It is a little better than the old Gimp 2.8 version.

https://youtu.be/DEPR6TERboE  two and a half minutes

More complicated, tends to be more hands on, but you can still use that Tile Seamless as a basis to build on.
