Still looking at possibilities and if you have a mouse where the wheel "clicks" left and right (my ancient logitech does)
Setting Scroll Left to zoom a selection and Scroll Right to restore full canvas.

...and you could use that with the mouse wheel zoom-in / zoom-out (I have that set to brush rotate and I am not going to change that yet again for the sake of a demo
