@ Joe Since you are familiar with graphics editing, This using Gimp 3 and various ways of making a drop shadow
Filters -> Light & Shadow -> Drop Shadow (legacy)
Filters -> Light & Shadow -> Drop Shadow
An older method, duplicate text layer, Layer -> Text-to-Path then colour / blur / move as drop shadow.
