Preview images instead of list in the file open dialog

In the file open dialog in Gimp (3.0 and 2.10) I only see the file names of the photos in list form (e.g. DSC1234.jpg, DSC1235.jpg, DSC1236.jpg...DSC1255.jpg). To open a specific file from a large number of files, you must know the file name.
Is it possible in Gimp to display the preview images in the open dialog instead of the list display? This is possible in the Windows programs I have been using so far (Photoshop and Affinity-Photo).

As far as I know getting a "better" Gimp file browser is dependent on GTK and is limited to what you have now.

Since you are using Mint you could try installing GwenView (if not already installed) and here using kubuntu 24.04 / Gimp 3.0.4 appimage using Gwenview generates thumbnails that the Gimp file manager uses.

But they are painfully small. You can drag and drop images, either singly or multiple, from Gwenview into the Gimp toolbox to open or into the canvas to open as layers.

first the thumnails from Gwenview, then drag-n-drop images into Gimp.

Hello, thanks for the quick reply. Oops, Gimp is a bit backward :-(
I'm a Linux newbie and I don't know if the GTK you mentioned is a part of GIMP or Linux in general. Anyway... in Windows I have the same problem with GIMP: only list view.
But the tip with Gwenview helped me a bit. When I drag the files from the file manager into the file open dialog of GIMP, at least the thumbnails in the box to the right of the file list are updated. When opening, only the placeholder for jpg files is displayed. That helps a little :-)
