Question About Color Balance Tool
#1
Hi

I'm finally (and thankfully) being forced to switch to GIMP but I've just hit my first snag.

I want to adjust the color balance of an image on the master level (in other words, adjusting the color balance on the image as a whole; not shadow, midtones and highlights separately) but the Color Balance tool doesn't have an option to do so.

I'm sure the there has to be some way of doing it on the master level but there doesn't appear to be an obvious way.

Could someone please help?

Thanks

Did you try Colors ➤ Color temperature?

Well, as a possibility.

From the definition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_balance

The gimp_gmic_qt plugin http://www.gmic.eu has a color balance filter. Only a single adjustment, the neutral color and only a single slider adjustment.

Snags, it uses a preview, not directly on the canvas and that is not real time, you need to refresh the preview with adjustments, although there is a before/after split option.

Thanks for the reply.

No, unfortunately not. I'm specifically looking for a tool with "color to color" sliders like the Color Balance tool. It makes it exceptionally easy to arrive at a desired color. Almost no guess work involved.

That being said, a few hours ago I did discover a tool which should help somewhat until I can find a 1:1 replacement for Color Balance: Colors ➤ Components ➤ Channel Mixer.

I must humbly admit that I only used the "color balance" terminology because that's what GIMP calls it and I didn't want to confuse what I was looking for. In PhotoImpact, the tool that operates almost identically the same as GIMP's "Color Balance" but with a master option, was called "Color Adjustment."  From what I can gather, the tool you're talking about does something similar to white balance but on a color level. It looks like the Channel Mixer tool under Components is more in the direction of what I'm looking for.
