Rectangle Select Tool is only Square - Fixed
#1
GIMP 2.8.16 on Linux Mint 18.3

When I use the Rectangle Select tool it only allows square and uses the initial click as the centre of the square.  I have searched for help, tutorials show it working as I expected, starting at a corner and drag to the other corner.

I am not aware that I have changed anything, how can I fix it?

Thanks
Mick

In the Tool options untick the "Fixed" and the "Expand from center" checkboxes.

There is also the remote possibility that you have stuck keys (pressing Shift while dragging enforces the fixed aspect ratio, and likewise depressing Control sets "Expand from center")

In Edit>Preferences>Tool Options I cannot see any checkboxes.for "Fixed" or "Expand from center"
in Toolbox there is an eye symbol to the left of 'Rectagle Select', tried clicking that to remove it but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Am I looking in the wrong place?

I have just hit this problem again and I cannot find the checkboxes anywhere.  I am now on GIMP 2.8.22 and Mint 19.1.
The Toolbox window does not have a Tool Options section

Does that mean you closed the tool options sometime and Gimp remembers the new settings.

The easiest way is Edit -> Preferences -> Tool Options -> Reset Saved Tool Options to Default Values OK that and restart Gimp.

or

You can re-open the Tool Options dialogue. Windows -> Dockable Dialogues -> Tool Options However this puts the Dock in with Layers, Channels, ...etc https://i.imgur.com/zRVs5z0.jpg

sooooo....

Click and Drag the Tab back to under the toolbox https://i.imgur.com/aaIj1sv.jpg

Many thanks!  I have no idea how it got set that way, but I have now made a note of how to fix it, so it will never happen again Wink
