Removing dark background, no contrast
#1
Hello everyone,
I'm a total gimp newbie! I've been struggling for days with removing a dark background because there's not contrast between it and the subject's hair (dark brown hair on black background). I would like to know if there's hope of extracting the background from this image without losing some of the hair details.
Thank you very much.

What version of Gimp are you using?

Extracting a portrait without losing wisps of hair has long been the gimp users holy-grail of image editing. Still not there.

There is a foreground removal tool that is much improved but you do need a recent 2.10.x ( 8 or 10 or 12) that has the matting-levin option working.

Then it depends on the image, a larger one is easier to work with than smaller (but the tool is then slow, have patience)

Lack of contrast between foreground and background? you could try reducing layer opacity temporarily just to make selections.

I am packing in for the day but a quick video of what I mean. Small image plucked from the internet. Hope it helps.
