Resize pattern
#1
Hi, is there any method scale a small piece of semi-transparent noise pattern to use with an HD wallpaper.

I will explain. I had one pattern like this made for a button. I would like the wallpaper to have the same texture. Either I should go through the whole process of remaking the noise or find some way to scale this small image. Any help will be great.

PS : I have Resynthesizer plugin

Either use Filters > Map > Tile Seamless... or Resynthesizer to make your pattern layer seamlessly tileable.
Next you can use Filters > Map > Tile to create a larger layer.

What I do to create seamless pattern, is to use symmetry painting in "tile" mode, with the tile size equal to the required pattern size (and the image size big enough for at least 2x2 tiles). I then paint (or clone some other image) with progressively softer brushes until I can' t see seams, and then cut a tile (it can be cut anywhere).

Where can I find this option ? Thanks.

I will try others as well.

@Ofnuts , I will try and come back

When I try

Edit > Fill with Pattern Seamless , I get this error while trying to choose a pattern ( browse )

By default, it is a green leaf pattern

An error? Are you using Gimp 2.10.18? = "temp-procedure-number-2" with invalid parameter name "mask width".

If using your linux set up (but not Windows) then click-n-drag the pattern into the dialog: https://i.imgur.com/67Z20Yy.jpg
but: not going to work with a transparent layer.

----- back to --- resynthesizer

Find it in Filter -> Map -> Resynthesize Tick the tile-able options and it makes a seamless image from the original. Not the same as the original, there is an element of randomise in resynthesizer. It does keep transparency.

Pattern was originally for an icon ? Going to be very small. Maybe up scale before resynthesizing. A lot depends on the image.

yes, 2.10.18

Dragging and dropping pattern works. I had a transparent layer as the canvas. The output was nil. Then I tried with a layer with colour and got a pattern as the image.

I want to try Map - Tile options, but I am not sure how to do it. The bottom one works as it creates a separate tiled image, which has distinct borders.

Let us forget my button grade noise for the moment

Suppose I want to use Filters > Map > Tile seamless

I don't know how to select the tile image and then layer where I want. They are both in consecutive layers. I have the same issue with Map > resynthesise . I don't know how to tell source and target.

Another issue I got is that whatever I put in the patterns folder under .config> GIMP > 2.10 > patterns is not showing up as a pattern in GIMP. I tried .png and .pat, both fail to show up inside Pattern dialog.

@Ofnuts, I am still to try your suggestion as I was trying options one by one.

Successfully completed what I was looking for using
Edit > Fill with Pattern Seamless

I got lucky because if we copy the pattern image/layer , it will show among patterns as clipboard. I dragged and dropped it into resysthesise and completed the task. Happy and thanks. I will still try to learn the step I couldn't perform, if you don't mind. Smile

I was putting the pattern in the GIMP folder. I should have used " GIMP-AppImage". Sad

@ofnuts where to begin to find this option ?

A tip: Instead of the long winded path to the resources make your own folder(s) (plug-ins / scripts / fonts -etc) and add in Edit -> Preferences -> folders. You can even share these. I use the same for a regular 2.10.14 and a 2.10.18 appimage.

Since I am here; Symmetry painting, although I am sure Ofnuts will give a comprehensive reply. Make sure you have a canvas open, browse through the options.
