can i use an open source software logo to create another Logo!

I have an urgent and necessary question ! can i use an open source software"logo" icon (Public domain)  to create another logo not for another software for something like a movement  page and non profit  to serve an cause , so Can I modify it reshape, "note  the same logo but it has some  main additions to serve the new idea of the page! (The idea of the movement is based on it )

You need to very carefully read all the copyright fine print associated with image.
eg free to use and/or modify for commercial use
free for personal use only
must credit the original author and provide link to original image
etc etc

 the problem is "it is not just an image it is a logo of software, and i am not going to use it in development !( to another filed) ! i just  revisited the licence page and notice that the logo licence contains 2 parts the icon and the text
