Slow file access

Question
Hello! New to this forum so I'll just ask my question...

When I click on things as "open as layer", "open", "export as" etc., (every time you open the Windows Explorer) GIMP freezes and does not respond.
After approx. 30 sec, the explorer Window opens.
This is getting very annoying and very unproductive when using many layers...
The strange part is, that I've used GIMP on this computer for a long time and I got this problem today.
I have tried to reinstall GIMP and to simply restart my computer.

I've found a solution to this on Reddit (link to the solution), but it doesn't seem to work for me as I do not have any Floppy Diskette Drive.

I'm running GIMP 2.10.18 on a Windows 10 x64 computer. 8 GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 1060 3GB, Intel Core i5-7500 @ 3,40 GHz.

Please someone help me!
Thanks in advance.

Just a few tips , maybe this can help you :

PS : sometimes the explorer on my windows 10 computer freeze for 5 seconds if I load or save a file to my extended drive (USB). The reason is that the external drive goes in sleep mode when he isn't used for some time when I'm working on the PC (or after drinking a cup of coffee).

It is also possible that on this moment microsoft is downloading an update or the PC is making an automatic backup. This also slows own the explorer. But I have had this occurrence just a few time using my windows 10 computer.

Using CCleaner can also help you to clean up unwanted files and clean up the windows register.

No, that’s not the case. Explorer isn’t slow in general. I can use the same functions that are slow in GIMP in Word, Adobe Premiere and so on and those are as fast as they can be.
So it must be a problem with GIMP or a process that makes GIMP do that slowly.

SOLVED

Wow! I found the error!

The error, which appeared to be similar to https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/2672 was caused by a dead driver.
When I opened "Devices and printers" there was an "Unknown Device" and when I clicked on it the whole window froze (the same that happens in GIMP).
After about 30 sec it un-froze and disappeared. I got a message which stated that there were some devices that needed repair, so I opened device manager and at the very bottom of the page there is an option which is Universal Serial bus Controllers or USB-controllers. Under that option I found a dead drive of an unknown device. I uninstalled that and everything works flawlessy now! I think GIMP might have tried to search that device for files or similar but couldn't reach it (same as Devices and Printers couldn't).

Long story short: Uninstall dead drivers of USB or other storage units to hinder GIMP from searching forever.
