Smooth curves with paintbrush and mirroring
#1
Had a nice explanation and accidentally hit close Sad

Anyways, I'd like some help drawing smoother curves. I tried dynamics and my issues are that it doesn't follow to the cursor all the way(bigger line, bigger gap) and at the highest setting which is the only one that looks right to me its a bit slow. Is there some setting I missed to get it right on the cursor(I'm stuck using a mouse)? Is it just slow because of my pc or just the way it works?

If anyone has seen the christmas yogscast jingle jam then last year kieran used a similar tool to smooth his drawing and it seemed to work great. I think he was using photoshop though, plus a touchscreen and pen. I'd like to stay on gimp because it's free and just for fun. But even for fun I'd rather my drawings look a bit better than an episode of dr katz.

Also, is there a mirroring function(like in kieran's live drawing) that I've missed. I can't seem to find one. Plugin?

Are you talking about the 'Smooth Stroke' option ?

Yes, its supposed to slow your drawing process down, thats why it has a slider called 'Weight'.
'Quality' smoothes the brushstroke, a bit like smoothing does in Inkscape (in case you are familiar with it).

I tried an external plug-in once, called 'Lazy Nezumi', which does something similar with more options, but i couldnt make much use of it, so i ditched the free trial and saved some money Smile

Krita is a free painting program that has a symmetry tool.

The only setting that I know of in Gimp is the smooth stroke option which does lag/slow the brush down.

Not in Gimp 2.8.22, you will need to use the development version Gimp 2.9.8/9 Try Parthas version, co-exists with the regular Gimp. http://www.partha.com. The regular gimp.org is https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gim...-setup.exe

and an example, showing the symmetry options, also using the mypaint brushes in Gimp 2.9, https://i.imgur.com/yIM7UWr.jpg

Oh that's nice that it's at least in the new version. I usually am ok trying dev versions since it's just for fun so I'll try that out.

And yes I was referring to smooth stroke. I also meant that I played with the different dynamics to see if it did what I wanted but none of the options changed it the way I wanted so I stayed on pressure sensitive as it seemed like a plain curved line.

I'll check out those plugins and other programs too thanks!
