[split] Fake colorization
#1
I  don't know whether this is the right place to ask this question but if I don't ask I won't know.

I have colour photos to which I would like to apply a colorization effect to make them look like colourized black and white 50s post cards.

Does anyone know whether there is a filter or a special effect that would allow me to this in GIMP ?
or is the only way to achieve this would be to turn my colour photos into black and white and then colorize them by colour by colour?
this would be too time consuming considering I have to do this for about 50 photos!)

Impossible question with no possible answer?

Thank you in advance

You can try this:

  1. Make a duplicate of the image
  2. Run Color > Desaturate (Luminosity) on the bottom one
  3. Insert a gray (#B8BB8) layer under the top image
  4. Set the top layer to HSL Color mode: you will obtain an image of flat color areas (the group thumbnail, below)
  5. Layer > New from visible to obtain a layer from this
  6. Hide the gray layer and the image copy (you should only have the new and the desaturated layers)
  7. Set the new layer to HSL Color mode, you should obtain your initial image (more or less)
  8. Apply Colors > Posterize to the top layer to reduce the colors
In the screenshot below, I used a group that shows the result of the color extraction but it is not necessary.

(yes, this could require some preprocessing of the sky to make it more uniform, and this would have let me add a few more colors in the posterization).

It would be nice if you give an example about the result you're searching for... like bright colors? faded colors? Partial colouring?

Something like this https://c8.alamy.com/comp/KX955A/1950s-p...KX955A.jpg
or like this https://c7.alamy.com/comp/M6CX73/vintage...M6CX73.jpg

Please give an example

@SKILKINKS35

You could try the gimp_gmic_qt plugin http://www.gmic.eu
The color presets filter has hundreds of color look up tables (LUT) bound to be some that work for you.

That is what I initially thought, I have similar images in a collection, however the OP wrote

So, ... a 50's post card ?

Thank you all for your answers about colorization.

I have been working on colorizing my photos but I am still not happy with them

Is there a way to turn one's own photos into INFRARED COLOUR photos?
