Softproofing in Gimp
#1
I'm trying to figure out how to apply soft proofing in Gimp.

I use the following:

Operating system is Debian Bullseye
Gimp is 2.10.22

My system has been colour corrected using a Spyder5 and DisplayCalc, and applied system wide using xcalib. My monitor is a Dell U2412M ultrasharp.  Colour correction provides only a minor change in appearance.
My printer is an Epson XP960 and this works well via Gimp Print and also via Gimp gutenprint. Printed colours are reasonably close to the screen images, but I wish to explore the Gimp softproof option.

How should I do this?

I would ask on https://discuss.pixls.us/ (although they are very Darktable biased these days)

FWIW: I turn colour management in Preferences off and apply on a per-image basis from the View menu. A bit tedious since you need to re-open the same menu for each setting.

Might go like this 50 second demo: https://i.imgur.com/1bW5jYr.mp4

I use gutenprint as well, monitor is not calibrated but brightness is turned down and I know the printer 'tweaks'

rich2005,

Thanks for your reply, but I’m not sure that this helps.

As far as I can see, ‘softproofing’ is a Gimp thing, and nothing to do with DarkTable, or whatever (I use RawTherapee).

The Gimp manual provides only a VERY short mention of softproofing and I can’t find any other reference to it. So, I’ll forget about softproofing.

As I previously stated, my system (including the monitor) IS COLOUR CALIBRATED (so the Gimp screen is also corrected). I see no reason to remove this.

My problem is how to calibrate the image file before it is passed on to the printer.

I do have a SpyderPRINT system which can derive an .icc file to do this, but it only works on a Windows system. I’ve not yet been able to get it to work under ‘wine’. I guess that it would be OK to use this .icc file on a Linux system, if only the Linux printer drivers could accommodate this.

As far as I can see, neither the normal Linux print utility or gutenprint provide any way of doing this.

gutenprint does allow for adjusting the parameters of the image file, but these must be set manually, so I shall have to faff about to get the best settings and then save them.

(Note: The Gutenprint 5.2 User's Manual makes only a short and confusing statement wrt .icc files)

It would be so much easier, and probably more accurate, if someone could update gutenprint to include an .icc file.

Again, thanks for your reply

What I meant was there seems to be more DT / RT users than Gimp users on pixls However:

You could ask the developers about that: https://sourceforge.net/p/gimp-print/_members/ there is a mailing list reference there.
