Text Editor hardly ever works!!
#1
Exclamation
I went from 2.10 to 3 this year, and have never had a good experience with the Text tool!!  I hate it!!

When using the on-canvas text editor, I select my text and type in a new font at the top, and select it, the font does NOT change!
When selecting a font and size from the left side tool panel, with my text selected, it has no affect!
When using the big Text Editor, my text is microscopic no matter what size I set the font to..
'Use Selected font' may work, but I cannot tell, because I need a microscope to see my text.

When doing any of these actions, I always have my text selected.  This has pretty much been the same for me from v2 - v3 for the past years.

I remember years ago when it seemed to kind of work.
Does it work this way for everyone?  Is there a fix for this??

The font will change. Same with the size. If you have the 'use on-canvas editor' only checked you can change your font/s as you like.
You can make your type larger, but that might mean messing with a gimp file. Someone who knows more about gimp can let you know.

Gimp 3.0.6-1, here no problem. You can try to select the text and then you can change the font and make it larger / smaller

The on-canvas text tool that came in with Gimp 2.8 was a great improvement over the older Text Editor dialogue. Unfortunately many users (not all) use the on-canvas editor incorrectly.

Use the Text Tool Options to change the overall Font or color or size.... Making a selection has no effect in this case.

Use the on-canvas dialogue to only change selected characters. If you have the on-canvas off (show on-canvas editor in the tool options) then turn it back on again.

Otherwise you have to use the old text editor, which does work, but I do agree, not very convenient.

Thanks for the replies!!!  And video..

I usually duplicate a text layer that has all the properties already that I want, and then change the text.  It act quirky on duplicates?  Hard to say with so many options/editors..

What I did notice was that on the in-canvas editor you have to manually type the full font name in to change the font.  Selecting it from the list doesn't work.

Selecting to change part of the text font using the Toolbox tab alone(both editors unchecked), changes the font for ALL the text, not just what is selected.

Having Kerning set to a non-zero number on the Toolbox tab, multiplies the Kerning used in the in-canvas.  (2 x 3 = you get 6 Kerning on selected text!)

I'm sure I noticed other nuances, but couldn't explain them.
This kind of info would be helpful if I could have read it somewhere, rather than going nuts..  But spending the past hour playing with the text editors helped me see these few weird things..

I don't suppose any of this above info (and more) is documented anywhere?  Or is it just my system that's messed up??

Kind of helps. I think you can only edit a text while it is still in the basic mode - if you have already added to it you might find difficulty changing it properly then.
can you showyour layers as well please?
